102.7 working on the tower again?

Jack is dead up here, 104.5 is very week as well as 101.9, how much longer are they going to keep on working on that tower? What are they doing to it any one know?

At one time, didn't 102.7 have an auxiliary antenna on one of their 4 AM towers at the Eisenhauer studio/AM transmitter location?

Still does. Here's a handy -- if irritating -- way to tell when 102.7 is on that aux: listen for 102.7's audio all over North SA @ 103.25. If during that time you are trying to listen to Err America on KTXX,

1: Why?
2: You'll hear the beat chew up 103.1.

Reason for the odd frequency? That's the beat product of mixing 102.7 Mhz (FM) and 0.55 Mhz (AM). Actually there is also a beat (spurious carrier) at 102.25, but 101.9 covers it up.

I'd be curious if you (jras) can DX the "All-New, All-Over-The-Dial [email protected]" when they are on the aux.

Expect the ToA work to go on for a while: they've had some burnouts, the City is repairing the roof (which requires the stations to go off), and the pylon may have some erectile issues.

Are they on it now? If so I cant dx it because of KTXX, KBPA is only about 12 miles from me also so that kind of takes care of that. Do you have the specs for the jack 103.25? Once it gets warmmer when I get a chance I'm going to crank my antenna back over towards downtown San antonio, right now I have it going towards KELZ (more south of San antonio)

Aren't people getting stuck in elevators once a week because of power failures due to construction? Landry's has been remodeling for a couple of months. That's got to be causing those transmitters to jump on and off the air.

Tower of the Americas is supposed to reopen in "Spring 2006" according to http://hotx.com/hot/hillcountry/sa/tours/hemisfair/toa.html. Shouldn't be too much longer now.

For your entertainment, check out http://www.hobiebarnes.com/images/friends/sa_sep04/040903---Tower-of-the-Ameri.jpg or any number of TOA pix from images.google.com

You can see that the pylon ($10 word for pole) has three individual FM antennas on it. Lot of filtering between each antenna and its associated transmitter to (allegedly) keep the mixing products down.

I am told that the stations have talked about a combined antenna solution for years, but...

Side note: I see that the guy who runs the cool tower-site page at http://www.fybush.com/ has never visited San Antonio. I would think that the TOA would get Scott's attention.

Re: The old KTFM 102.7

Thats cool... So far my longest catch was about 192 miles to from just south of Austin to Laredo, when KTSW was silent I could pull in KBNL almost like a local, clear enough to get a RDS signal, down at my place in Lavaca county my longest catch was catching Beaumont at 184 miles away.

My farthest is still when I lived in Tulsa, OK in the mid-80's. Got WCGY 93.7 out of Lawrence/Boston, MA. Second farthest was WRNS-FM 95.1 Kinston, NC. Distant signals seem to travel better in Texas, but I never got anywhere near the long range DX there! However, I understand you can get some from Florida and the Gulf Coast during the late spring/early summer, possibly the early fall as well, when the trans-gulf tropo opens up.

Re: The old KTFM 102.7

Just this last summer I was picking up 94.9 in Tallahassee Fl. with my antenna 20'up pointed to Houston out at Lavaca county.
______________

Re: The old KTFM 102.7

My furthest catch was purely an accident. I was listemnig to KJ97 one fine summer afternoon in 2003 between Bandera and Kerrville headed north. Another station blotted out KJ and came in clearly for about ten minutes. During this was a commercial break and several promos for Soft Rock EZ97 from Toronto Cananda. 1,470 miles away and booming into the Texas Hill Country like a local. As much DXing as I used to do this was the furthest. I sent them an email requesting a QSL but never got a response.

I have my share of 1500 mile tropo DX. But KTFM, Austin, and Dallas from Midland were sustained, repeatable, and dependable. Otherwise, there would have been no motivation for me to DX. I was in it for the music, which was nothing but hillbilly in Midland, TX. If I wanted rock on FM, it was DX 300 miles or give up. I DX'ed.
