102.9/1230 Inquiry

Could...not would, and sure *they could* but would

WECK ever go....say, CHR. . .but not "sell" as an AM station,
but focus on The FM side of things example (power 102)radio/and.......
zip in the AM ID quickly!! i mean lke aM twlv Thrty/ FM 102.9 the _____ !

just curious...

I already know owner too old,
but I hope he is not on air if it
is CHR or ROCK....

and I know..
why bother cause that costs money....
again, it is just a quick thought...
isn't that the point of this forum....hmmm?

Interesting thought. Entercom paid $10-million plus for 107.7 to prevent just that on a week signal. The only way they could afford it would be syndication. Considering their translator location, it would be up against WBLK and Kiss. Tough nut to crack.

Sure, this is a forum where we can have a discussion of realistic issues. But c'mon, Radio Bored Op. "Power 102" on what is the weakest FM signal in the market? What are you thinking? No one in his/her right mind will purchase WECK and its FM translator at Dick Greene's current asking price. You really think anyone in CHR's primary listening demo is going to tune in an AM station with a weak translator? What WECK is currently doing now is the only realistic format for these frequencies. Entercom overpayed for 107.7. That was nearly ten years ago. Won't happen again in the Internet age. Let's be real here, huh?

The only thing I'd argue with is that the signal ain't that weak in the car, especially in the city and the first ring 'burbs. It's pretty listenable when you're driving the 90-190-290 loop, and the 33-198. The AM is the add-on here, not the primary, despite what the FCC says.

The biggest problem is the same problem that 107.7 has. It can fill a format hole, but as soon as it makes enough noise, a higher-powered FM will simply supplant it. So, your success is limited.

It could get interesting if somebody took it ethnic. Is the Hispanic community in Buffalo big enough to support it? I don't think that we'll find out under the current owners at the current selling price.

Philip...Sirox supported and GOT what I was saying...
you wont sell it as Club 12 , on the AM dial...
if u must u say am twvl thry, with cool edit, u
say it faster than the disclaimer after the car ads...
talkin Jimmy John sandwich fast...and then
place EMPHASIS on the (name power for example)
on 102.9 - and if it has an urban format,
have more throwback mix shows...perhaps
OPPOSITE of wblk's youth sound..
ie: quiet storm.. wkse wont go all street mix
or a 98.live throwdown...

If you skew it more towards pop40
crack song titles earlier, less rep, and
play a few more remixes/album cutz than wkse..

"The internet" is theeee answer for everything
.."google it" / "youtube" it or put on Pandora
why not focus on a station that targets
what people listen to... ...BUT NOT ONLY
what people listen to...expand the playlist..
and enchance the station for this market..
along with the cdn. artists...( for example)

and yes entercomm way over paid for "wild 107.7"
to only have it be a repeater of an am station...

Simulcast, RBO

As to CHR on 1230 / 102.9, the answer is "not likely." Kiss is a CHR steamroller. WBLK is a force to be reckoned with. The two stations attract a considerable number of listeners in the 12-49 demo. Both are full power Class B FMs. Rox may have understood what you were proposing, but Phil offered an accurate, albeit hard-nosed assessment of reality in Buffalo in 2013. The 102.9 translator may hit the core of Urban listener population, but it's only a translator, 220 watts @ 568 feet. That's pretty hefty for a translator, but it exists in the shadows of high power 102.5 and 103.3, and just within the hash marks for each of those station's HD (Hash Dreck) carriers. 1230/102.9 now has a niche format and a differentiation factor that it hasn't had since 1230 was the home of the "Music of Your Life" format. Yes, it was a while ago, but believe it or not, the station often placed in the top five and sometimes top three, Persons 12+.

well said JP-B . . .
thinks a CHR ,
well another CHR would perform well here in Buffalo.

Taking a look, and maybe a new topic
with Cumulus taking 96.9 and 103.3
.. ..

Also: I get it, the 102.9/1230 "should" be the
format that it is today...

Just an amateur's point of view. I've been listening to the new format since it started. Enjoy it in the car and online at work. Tonight, I was delighted to hear Ralph Irene starting his Sunday night shift with "Sinatra and Friends". Don't know if he's still bringing in his own albums, but the mix is, to this younger listener, fantastic. Just wonder - all you "pros": If Mr. Greene isn't committed to this format, as some of you seem to believe, why do a local show with an icon at the mike?
