102.9 DRC-FM

I know that their has been some topics regarding DRC-FM's format and all. Well I had DRC-FM on a little while today. This is from someone who hasn't heard the station since they were Big Hits 102.9. Well to me they sounded like the same. I did hate a couple songs they played, I can say those songs aren't big hits by any means. I guess this change for DRC-FM hasn't been good for ratings either as I see they have dropped a whole lot. Any comments?

Personally, I don't understand DRC's seemingly heavy focus on R&B and Motown tunes, many of which aren't anything close to hits at all. Obviously DRC is flirting with a "Jack" format but are reluctant to expand on the few early 80's tunes they play and mix in some stuff from the the late 80's/early 90's for example. I'd like DRC to sound something more like "BEN-FM" out of Philadelphia.

Buckley has to right this sinking ship and quick. Bland vanilla radio isn't gonna cut it in Hartford for much longer.

The R&B and Motown songs have always been the best thing about DRC-FM, IMO. Matter of taste, I guess.

That said, I notice they've dropped the "building Connecticut's biggest music library" and "like an iPod on shuffle" positioners over the last few days and gone to "the greatest hits of all time" (which they've used in the past) and "the biggest hits of the '60s, '70s and '80s." And, except for the lesser soul hits that have always been part of DRC-FM, hardly anything is being played that you could call "obscure" or "forgotten." No more Ohio Express' "Beg, Borrow and Steal" or Donovan's "Season of the Witch" -- which I heard played back to back a few weeks ago.

They don't have to right this sinking ship ... my oldies stream picks up a few disillusioned DRC-FM listeners per week. I give it a listen every so often in the car, but it's a far cry from the very listenable way they were in the past (not to mention the eeck audio processing).

Yeah, you got that right. But do mention it, and KEEP mentioning it. Maybe, just maybe, somebody will pay attention and do something about it. There's just no excuse for it, period. I believe they run Aphex 2020 (although I'm not sure what rev.) and that processor can do much better. If you want proof, listen to I-95.

A Idea I Have For 102.9

Buckley Radio sells the station to Entercom

Entercom changes the format to a rock format that plays some classic rock with some new alternative mixed in. For example Nickelback, Green Day, etc. This might just work. And they could call it 102.9 The Peak WTPK. As their on top of West Peak Mt.

Or this, which I doubt some people wouldn't like to see happen. Entercom makes 102.9 part of the WEEI Sports Network. Sports Radio 102.9 WEEC. But I like the first idea better. Your opinions.

Must we have ANOTHER rock station? How about just cleaning up the playlist and leaving it alone?

How so? Bring back the '50s songs? Drop the '80s songs? Drop the R&B? Drop the disco? Drop everything that never hit the top 5 nationally? Drop everything that you can't already hear on at least one other station in the market?

Obviously, there was *something* about DRC-FM's old playlist that was attracting an audience that advertisers have no use for, so returning to the pre-"Big Hits" playlist, with all the Gene Pitney and Four Seasons and Elvis material, is most likely not an option.

Too bad, because during that period DRC-FM brought something different to the table and was actually worth listening to. They are not exactly lighting the world on fire now, are they?

To be honest, I kinda like the new 102.9

I must have different tastes than is popular,

But I like the fact that WDRC is playing some songs I haven't heard on the radio in some time or ever.

I was born in 1979 so most of their music is older than me, but when I hear music by artists I know but songs I don't, it kinda reminds me of listening to clips of radio of the past. It's kinda cool, I've heard some pretty good songs and once in a while I'll be really into it.

Alot of duds are played too though, so I can't say I listen consistantly.

It would be nice if the station was really into the music and the artists, but it's still a little bit too commercial. As an oldies station though, it's playlist was way too tight.

Re: A Idea I Have For 102.9

it is kind of odd to have a station play format roulette like DRC, yet keep the same announcers. I once heard a PD say, "the listeners will never accept the new direction as long as we keep the same jocks" regarding a station I was at.I tend to agree with that theory. The announcers at DRC have been there for a nice ride, and I have to wonder if listeners hear the name Doug Taylor and think "guy from the oldies station".

Re: A Idea I Have For 102.9

Well they did get rid of Mike Stevens from the morning show. And they got rid of Jack Carney. - Jack Carney who was a long time WDRC veteran. Years on 1360 and the past few on 102.9 FM.

What I'd like to see is someone buy an 910AM and launch an oldies station there. As much as I hate to say it, hello Clear Channel? They do a good job with Oldies 1470 WKAP in Allentown, Pennsylvania. If I'm not mistaken they play music from 1959-1974. There's a mixture of DJs, automation, syndication, and Phillies Baseball.
