102.9 kblx cut

Davis says: "I’ll miss speaking those iconic call letters 'KBLX'”.

That's rich, because hosts saying "KBLX" seems to be verboten now. For months, "KBLX" is only said in a rushed recorded top-of-the-hour ID. The rest of the time it's always "102.9" with the music leaning more classic hip-hop than the old mellow "soft and warm quiet storm" tunes 'BLX was associated with for years.

Perhaps Antoine was too soft and too warm?

"The quiet storm" delivery was great, 20 years ago. With competition from streaming listenership and all the other distractions, station ID needs to be more about where to find you and less about slogans. With PPM, station IDing other than frequency (where to find you) is nearly unnecessary.

Brand is everything, regardless of platform. The less your brand stands out, the less memorable it will be in a crowded field.

What the classic KBLX had was iconic. It stood for something, and even if you weren't always listening, you generally knew what it was and what it stood for. Harder to do these days.
