102.9 moving out of Atlanta

The reason for simulcasting 107.5 on 97.5 is the few miles on I-85 where Radio One's 107.9 completely blocks out 107.5.

Here's my guess as to what Radio One is planning: The Classic Hip-Hop format moves from 102.9 to 97.5, giving the format a full FM signal and a leg up on Cumulus' and Steve Hegwood's Classic Hip-Hop translator signals. Then, Radio One uses 102.9 to fill in the 107.5 signal in the area when it's blocked by 107.9.

The 2 obvious things that would be accomplished would be: 1)The 97.5 signal would be freed up to give R1's Classic Hip-Hop format the competitive advantage of being on a full FM. 2) Radio One wouldn't have to waste a full FM signal on the small area where 107.5 cannot be picked up; a less-valuable translator would be assuming that role.

Your overall point makes a lot of sense, but to call 97.5 a full FM signal? Obviously 97.5 with classic hip hop would give it a signal advantage over OG and Old School.

I wonder if Radio One was catching flak from Jacobs over interference with WDUN-FM on the same frequency.

wonder how they will brand Majic after the move.

This one doesn't make any sense. I suspect there is something going on that has yet to show itself. The translator won't cover enough people to make it that important to 107.5. Translators in a market like Atlanta can bring upwards of $1 per person in the 60 dBu contour so why move from a spot covering 1.3 million people (700,000 African Americans) to one covering 250,000 total and some 100,000 of the 250,000 are white? If it were WDUN-FM interference it would have happened long before now. Stay tuned on this one.

It won't have to cover a lot of people. It just needs to come in well in the I-85 area near the Hot 107-9 transmitter. They've been using a full FM to do that, and it's a waste of a signal. 107.5 does just fine everywhere else on its own.
