102.9 "The Lake" Debut

does anyone else feel like this may be a stunt? Remember a few years back when Clear Channel put "The Bull" on 100.7 in Raleigh only to unveil "The River" a month later?

Strange that The Lake moniker is used in Charlotte, as a previous poster noted. It works in Cleveland and did for about five years in Buffalo, on the northeast tip of Lake Erie. But earlier this year Entercom blew up Classic Rock WLKK 107.7 in favor of simulcasting news-talk WBEN-AM. Irony of ironies, WBEN-FM for years was assigned to the AM's sister on 102.5. It's now Philly's "Ben," owned by Greater Media. Wasn't there a better moniker for Charlotte than "The Lake?"

I think this format is here to stay, not a stunt. They were already repeating songs at 12am that they played at 9am yesterday, though. One of the worst variety hits stations I've ever heard.

Lite wasn't any good, but this isn't much of an upgrade.

102-9 The Lake

I heard a song tonight and I had to glance at the radio to see what station it was on. I thought I was listening to 106.5 The End.

Time to deep six The Lake. I agree with previous posts...very lame. And the name makes little sense. I also am sick of marketing names using "The Whatever". Ditto for people names like Jack, Bob, Alice, et. al. Frankly, using a good set of call letters would be a refreshing change. A shame for a good signal to be wasted on such as this.

I wonder if 102.9's flip had anything to do with getting 107.9 (and Greater Media) on iheartradio? Interesting that they are still showing as "Lite" on iheartradio.

They repeat a lot of the recent AC'ish songs like "I'm Yours" or "Smile" repeated frequently. I guess they think by doing that, they'll hang on to some of the old Lite audience? If they had a better balance between rock and pop, and leaned older, I think it would make more sense.

A lot of the 80s and 90s songs played on The Link are shared with The Lake. I find it hard to believe CC would let Greater Media/iHeartRadio determine what format they put on one of their signals. They have other competitors on the platform in other markets.

iHeartRadio is not owned by Greater Media, it's CC's baby. Cumulus and Greater Media just signed on to have their streams on the software.

Actually, 102.9 isn't using Premium Choice. Its recently played is quite different from Baltimore and Cleveland.

I wouldn't think they'd be able to use Premium Choice during the 5,000-song marathon - radically different when you have to factor in commercials and such.

By the way, I was listening earlier this hour, and right after The Eagles' "Life In The Fast Lane" (where the "g** damn" lyric was snuffed out), I heard Wham's "Everything She Wants," which has the most awkward song edit I have ever heard. They cut out the line, "I don't know what the hell you want from me," and bridged the verse with the start of the chorus. However, the line, "My God, I don't even think that I love you" remained intact. :p

And who's the voice guy for this thing? I would guess Ken Hudson Campbell, who played the part of "Herman's Lust" on the show "Herman's Head", but he's dead.

If 103.5 SHE-FM and The Lake are playing the same thing, they have to be using some kind of Premium Choice. None of the other CC variety hits stations I could think of off the top of my head were using it, forgot about SHE. Actually, the WSHE calls are legendary with the 103.5 frequency in Miami, so that handle might make more sense to locals....more than the "Lake."

I can't stand the VO or the imaging on 102.9. No idea who it is.

DtotheJ - Ken Hudson Campbell is the voice over guy and very much alive. He also voices for Cleveland, Ohio adult hits station WHLK "106.5 The Lake."

I thought I recognized those pipes... Thanks! I'm probably confusing Ken with another actor on "Herman's Head". Recently, when Herman Cain was campaigning for President, they got only three of the four "Head" actors together to do a revamped version of the show for the website Funny Or Die.
