102.9 The Whale All-Request Memorial Day Weekend

Passed by The Whale on the dial this weekend and they were doing another all request weekend for Labor Day. The caller I heard requested Jimi Hendrix and seemed authentic but also didn't seem all that enthusiastic about making his request.

but fun songs of any description -- including Buffett's "Margaritaville," incidentally -- are fine to play.
.....but NOT Buffett's "My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink and I Don't Love Jesus!"

WJMJ played Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones a few days ago which didn't really fit with the sound of the station.

Also, on a different note, WPLR played Shippin' Up to Boston on St. Patrick's Day yesterday.

I heard that! I'm pretty sure I've heard Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," and I know it plays both hit versions of "Light My Fire" (and the Doors' "Touch Me") as well. Hard to believe they're OK with all that presumably premarital or nonmarital -- and thus sinful -- activity being celebrated musically. And why was "My Sweet Lord" played after one of Father John's mini-sermons? George Harrison wasn't writing or singing about the same Lord.

I'm sure they get more than an occasional email critical of song choices, but there's no doubt that the music is attracting more than an occasional nonbeliever and exposing them to several strong Catholic teachings every hour, which is what the station is on the air to provide.

The difference in transmitter power and signal range makes it unlikely, but if all things were equal, might not WJMJ's format -- with the secular "The Promised Land" (Springsteen) and "With You, I'm Born Again" (Billy Preston & Syreeta) used to fill time between features like Saint of the Day and Lenten Reflections rather than songs directly about Christianity -- prove a more effective way to attract listeners and donors than what EMF is pumping out on WCCC?

WJMJ doesn't really care if the song is referencing the Christian God or not as long as it has a spiritual message. My Sweet Lord fits that bill perfectly. The whole lawsuit/controversy over My Sweet Lord vs. He's So Fine in the 1970s was overblown. Yes, the two songs have an almost identical chord progression and the Chiffons tune was clearly in Harrison's subconscious when he wrote it. But Harrison still turned it into another song entirely that had a whole different feel/message to it.

I get the impression that Father John was a big fan of DRC-FM as well as lite rock stations like WIOF and pre-country WWYZ in their heyday. His air staff is full of alumni. Listening to Mike Stevens yesterday afternoon was like stepping into a Big D/Oldies 103 time machine. With Jerry Kristafer, Steve Savino and Floyd Wright also pulling airshifts, all that needs to be done is locate and invite Larry "My Mother's Favorite Disc Jockey" Wells to the crew. "Love somebody!"

Glenn O'Brien would be a welcome addition, too. I used to enjoy his comfortable, informative style on DRC-FM.

Has WJMJ ever played The Ballad of John and Yoko? It's one of my favorite Beatles songs, but of course also has the controversial lyric "Christ you know it ain't easy...." so not sure if JMJ would play it or not.

I doubt it. I just searched the past five days' playlists and couldn't find a single spin. WJMJ plays lots of Beatles tracks -- six to 10 a day -- including non-hits like "The End," "You Never Give Me Your Money" and "Till There Was You." The "Christ" used as an interjection in "Ballad" probably is a step too far. Oddly, John Lennon's "Imagine," including a wish for no religion anywhere in the world, gets played.

I heard Rickie Lee Jones' "Chuck E's in Love" yesterday. That has the line "Christ, he's even combin' his hair" in it. No problem for JMJ, apparently, as the song was played untouched.

Has WJMJ ever played an unexpurgated version of "Life in the Fast Lane" by the Eagles?

Heard today: Someday Soon -- Judy Collins. "He loves his damned old rodeo as much as he loves me." IIRC, that mild cuss word was something of an eyebrow raiser on Top 40 radio in the very early '70s. WJMJ also plays Suzy Bogguss' '90s country remake of "Someday Soon," which also includes "damned."
