102.9 WCLX .... Gone

Being in Maine, and not having been to Vermont since the late 80's, I never heard this station. Too bad; it sounds like it was pretty damn cool, both to work at and listen to.

Re: 102.9 WCLX .... Online

Grit, you can listen - the station is still online. Apparently only 102.9 in Westport has signed off. Owner Dennis Jackson must want to make some more money with it than the Album Station could pull in. Good luck in over-radioed Vermont.

The online streaming link is at their homepage.

Jackson posted in their guestbook that the station had been running on a deficit for nearly a year, and recently he had been supporting it out of his own pocket. Sponsorships didn't come through, and he ended up having to pull the plug.

Diane, the Music Director has posted a rather strident response to Dennis Jackson over at the Album Station website. And Jackson's comment was removed before I could see it. It would appear that Jackson and the operators didn't maintain a relationship where they could address each others' concerns. Either that, or they had a falling out.

While commercial radio is a business, Jackson had been "hosting" WCLX on his facility for nearly 10 years. It's surprising something couldn't be worked out in advance of a shutdown.

Jackson has been selling some stations lately. Maybe the bad economy is squeezing him. But you wouldn't think this would be a good time to turn a transmitter off. Station buyers aren't exactly dropping out of the trees these days, and Jackson's going to have to put something on that signal within 30 days. Maybe the people leasing WNMR can simulcast in the other direction to get Corm and the Coach more coverage.

But it doesn't sound like The Album Station will be coming back to 102.9 any time soon, if ever. And that's a shame.

I'll miss listening to the station, it really did play an incredible variety. It wasn't the least bit commercial or especially saleable as a format, but for musicheads, it was a cool place.

Regarding Ms. Desmond's post at their website: is it ever a good idea to burn bridges quite so publicly? I know she's understandably bitter and upset at having the plug pulled, but airing dirty laundry like that will only soil her in the long run.

Anyone that knows Dennis Jackson knows what a great guy he is. He has gone above and beyond letting Russ and Diane operate his station. Once again, his station. Very disrespectful comments made by Diane on the WCLX website. Dennis deserves much better than the way he has been treated by Russ and Diane. I've admired what they have done musically with the station but not how they have treated Dennis.

I second that. Dennis gave them the chance to do what thousands of current and ex-radio people would have loved to do.... do their own thing musically on-air with the responsibility of bringing in a moderate amount of cash (likely thats all he asked for). I don't know anything about Russ & Diane, but I do know that Dennis is a good guy in this biz.

Couldn't he atleast told the staff that he was pulling the plug on the transmitter? Most local owners I know would have kept people informed a little more than it seemed Jackson was.

Maybe EMF will buy this station too.

I'm not a fan of this website, but I do sporadically visit. One of the things that really bothers me is that people don't use their real names. My feeling is that if you truly believe what you are saying is the truth and you want to share your opinion, you should be willing to "sign your real name". In the past, I have read some very insulting comments about Russ and me and the radio station. I sincerely hope that no one really thinks that is okay.

Now.....about my message that appears on the home page of our website......I would really like to know what exactly is disrespectful about it. I did not call anyone names. I did not write anything that wasn't true. In fact, I actually modified and did not mention all comments that Mr. Jackson made to us. I just wanted to make it clear that the finances were only part of the entire story. There was so much more to it than that. I was also horrified by Mr. Jackson insinuating that he had paid ALL expenses "out of his own pocket" since last December. (!) He did not. He cashed checks that I sent him that were backed by advertising revenue. To quote me as saying that our "advertisers had not been paying their bills" was an enormous insult to them. And to me. I really dislike being misquoted.

"Bitter" isn't an accurate word to use either. Naturally, I don't feel very good about The Album Station being off the air (Rock format now transformed into the new Hot Static format). In fact, I feel very bad. We were closely approaching our tenth anniversary. Russ and I put our hearts and souls into this radio station for over a decade. We also worked very hard. Many many people don't appreciate how much time and energy it actually takes to keep a radio station running, especially with a very small staff. It takes a LOT of time and energy. Believe it.

Sure, the person who holds the paper technically "owns" the station. But, if that person doesn't do any of the work, or conceive any of the ideas, or create any of the programming, or talk to the listeners every day over the air, or answer their phone calls and e mails, connect with the advertisers, write and produce the ads, and keep that music going 24/7 (that also includes engineering trips by Russ at often inconvenient times to fix transmitter issues)....well......whose radio station is it? Dennis Jackson is the licensee, of course. But, for the past decade, we have worked out of our own studio where we do indeed own all that is needed to broadcast that music to our great listeners, who have been very supportive over the years and now. (We do not own the transmitter building or the tower, but neither does Dennis.) Please do visit our website. And listen to us online. www.musicheads.us

This, like it or not, is what it all boils down to at the end of the day. I don't know Dennis (or you and Russ) so it would not be appropriate for me to speculate either way on who's right and who's wrong.

I'd like to think that in each market there's a small but passionate group of album-rock fans (and advertisers that want to reach them) that could support such a station as WCLX. Few owners are willing to take the chance on such a format because there are no charts and graphs that will tell you "this niche format is/could be a winner." Investors need charts and graphs, after all.

That said, I've always enjoyed your station when visiting the Burlington area. I was listening online over the weekend and actually found myself downloading "Near You" by Boz Scaggs on iTunes after I heard you play it. I had never heard the song before and I loved it!

Here's hoping you can continue to do what you do with another owner/dial position.

Hi Diane,

I've been a big fan of "The Album Station" whenever I've been up to VT or heard it online, and I have always posted with my real name. I feel that if I wanted to post anything that I would want to hide by not disclosing my identity, then I shouldn't post it at all. Though I have met Dennis and haven't personally met you and Russ, I'm not going to take any sides or comment on this situation at this point. I'll just say that I've admired the work you and Russ have done to keep a wide variety of album music, the likes of which is seldom heard anywhere else on terrestrial radio anymore, on the air for (nearly) ten years against the odds, and I wish you the best of luck and fortune in finding a new on-air home for it.

I agree with Diane on several points. First, who are these people making negative or nasty comments about others? Why not share your real names? Second, the issues that caused me to take WCLX dark (with several weeks' notice) go beyond financial, although I will not air them here. Suffice it to say that it is common in radio for people to have one image or reputation among those who don't know them personally, and another among knowledgeable broadcasters who do. Where you stand depends largely on where you sit.

Seven Days has a fair-minded news item about the WCLX situation. See http://7d.blogs.com/blurt/2009/09/album-station-goes-silent.html

Dennis Jackson
(aka "Peter Tripp")

"It's a wonderful station," said Jackson. "I know there is a lot of acrimony around it. But I'm not sure anyone behaved badly; it was simply a business decision."

And I think that should be the stepping off point for everyone involved.

I'm a huge fan of Russ and Diane's Album Station, having streamed it into my home in the Philadelphia area almost every day for the past 3 years. I'm also a big fan of Dennis's WRIP Windham/Hunter Mountain NY on the weekends which features everything from a personality-driven AAA show on Friday nights to oldies on Saturdays and Standards(!) on Sunday nights.

Dennis needs some programming for 102.9/Westport or a sale. Russ and Diane need an outlet for their programming. There are several possibilities here. Some enterprising radio salesman/group could figure out how to sell The Album Station programming to a wider slice of the advertising community via the web and possibly terrestrial outlets. The Album Station programming is definitely of national caliber. Dennis could sell the 102.9 license to a new group who might be able to handle deficit financing (though that would no doubt be tough in this sluggish economic environment) and reinstate WCLX which has a 10-year heritage in Central Vermont.

Neither party benefits from the current situation. Here's hoping some harmony and a solution can be found.

Oh, and no one would recognize my name if I published it. But you can be assured that I stand by my content and I'll keep this name so people can evaluate me by my post track record. In my case, the name's definitely less important than the content.

What is on 102.9 WCLX now is some sort of feed from the low power WMUD people. WMUD is a low power, non commercial, operation that transmits from Moriah NY, and seems to have two feeds. Info at wmud.org. The WMUD people appear to have their format available for syndication. It is very eclectic, broad, and incorporates many musical genres into the format. Seems ironic to replace "Brand A" with "Brand B" in the deep deep AAA format musical vault on WCLX. The WCLX calls, I believe, are still in place. Not sure if this operation is commercial or non commercial.
