1020/WIBG AM About to be sold on the cheap cheap.

Not that it's worth to much anyway as the lowest rated station in the market. Aparently replacing the blown out AM transmitter just about did them in. I guess a good lightning resister was a cutback that was ill concieved.

Now, Brac has to unload it to avoid defaulting on the note on the FM. That's on the block too. Guess dollar a holler doesn't pay the bills after all. Amature hour broadcasting doesn't help either. As the second lowest rated station in the market, bottom feeder status will be hard to unload.

Oh, then there's that pesky basic broadcast wisdom. It goes like this: if your FM is being beat by an automated AM property by 3 to 1, doing the same format, you probably should exit the broadcast business, or run a contest; "Name that debitor in possession", cause unfortunately you'll never quite recover the cost you overpaid for the property.

Hi Sam, I actually very much like the choice of music on WIBG-FM. I've always enjoyed great oldies. The jocks connect with me. Haven't won any of their contests but that's ok - being in the media I may not be eligible anyway.

I think the AM is a respected station that does news and politics. I prefer music personally but i'm sure it has its audience.

How would you do the FM differently? josh

Any of a 100 different way's. The police scanner has as higher audience. The weather crystal has a higher audience. AC airport traffic control has a higher audience. 15 stations from Philly that don't even put a signal into the market have higher ratings. Must I go on.... When it goes into recievership, the new owners will bring it back to life under new call letters.

If you were able to secure WIBG-FM what specifically would you do to make a station grow an audience?

Appreciate your feedback! josh

If you were able to afford any radio station in the Atlantic Market, AM or FM (or even the Philadelphia Market) what format would you choose and specifically what would you do to make it stand out from the rest?

There are a lot of great radio stations in AC that have each carved out a large number of listeners. So what will you do to make your new station stand out?

I am always interested when someone says, "I can do this station better."

This could be a great topic. "My idea of what would be the best radio station in America is.. "

In fact, I'm going to start this in another topic to encourage more to join in. josh

What to do with an AM daytimer and a crappy Class A FM?

AM is easy - broker it out with syndie talk to fill out the schedule if need be. The FM? Can't do oldies/classic hits since the market is saturated already...CHR is covered, same with rock,. Country, and Hot AC. I'd go either Jammin Oldies or Urban AC with it - own a niche in the market rather than being someones second or 3rd choice.

Personally I think the market is over saturated with signals....and this whole situation is a good example of why.

I agree that there are too many stations, translators, what have you, in a market that cannot sustain them economically, and even more so, in these hard times.
You end up with debtors in possession and just plain bankruptcy.

I don't think the coverage area of the FM is that great for an urban format. It might be worth trying the syndicated talk on FM and something in Spanish on the AM, which looks like it gets into AC and Pleasantville better than the FM does.

I do wonder about Spanish in any market in South Jersey and Philadelphia included. There are a lot of Spanish buyers right now. I know at least 3 or 4 but Spanish buyers represent complicated matters with that being said. I think an owner would do well not to sell to a Spanish buyer but to bring in good honest people, keep the station and run a Spanish format. Just bring in a bilingual manager. I believe the format has HUGE potential for the any owner and just because one doesn't speak the language shouldn't deter the owner from the possibility of sowing the big benefits of broadcasting a Spanish format. I believe it's a Million Dollar Format - Little or no competition and listeners begging for the format. Most Advertisers want to reach the Spanish market but there are few stations that cater to them. It's really, mainly an untapped market.

As for Talk on the FM. Take a look at how WWIQ news/talk in Philadelphia has shot up in three months: 0.2 (first month) 1.1 (second month) 1.6 (third month) 193,100. It's not done. National talk radio has its audience and a big one at that. I believe they can hit about 3.6 - 4.2 in Philly. An FM station in AC Market styled like the old WWDB in Philly can go to 5.0 or higher in my opinion.

Sam, you speak as if you have a lot of experience and knowledge. Besides Sam Lit Radio on the internet, what other stations have you programmed?

Have to agree...there are way too many stations in the AC market...when there were only 5 AM stations at the shore, each station still had plenty of advertising spots available....but then when Fm stations began showing up,they took most of AMs advertisers...Dont need all of these stations down here all fighting for the few businesses that advertise....EAST COAST ROOFING,THE FUDGE KITCHEN,CAR TOYZ,and the auto dealerships...that pretty much does it......

Its not that there is too much talk in the local southern NJ market IMHO, its that the talk is all the same and 1020 AM is the worst of all. Their talk line up is an embarrassment, or maybe they are just lazy. They basically have culled a few guys who were available and who treat the programs like a fraternity, joking around, calling in to each others shows and inviting their buddies to come in and wing it as a co host. The lack of professionalism is a turn off and - i actually have emailed this to one host - since they were just bringing in people who were not broadcast professionals but just former callers, the failure to bring in one woman host is a shame. Another problem is that they allow people to call in more than once per show, so while they get a lot of calls, they do not get a lot of callers. Put them up against the nearest competition which is 1400 AM and they dont cut it. 1400 often does live remotes which puts the host out into the community - that kind of community outreach is vital to a small local station and i dont know why they don't do it.
As for advertisers, you basically have two formats and several stations going to draw from the same pool again and again. There are many potential sponsors from Cape May Co to Cumberland that might chip in if they were approached but of course the hosts who all have day jobs might not be able to manage this. But the ad sponsors are out there.
