103.1 in corpus?

I was surfing around the radio while in Corpus and found 103.1 must be simulcasting 107.9 in Spanish? How did 103.1 get on the air so close to 102.9 if that is the case??

I guess I'm a little confused, since the 107.9 in Corpus is a LPFM and no translators are shown to operating on 103.1. So the only station anywhere near there is (or should be) KHHL in Karnes City. Are you saying there's something local on 103.1?

My guess would be what you heard was indeed KHHL 103.1 FM licensed out of Karnes City, TX. From time to time it comes in really good and clear here in Corpus Christi. KXVR-LP 107.9 FM has been off the air for over 2 years now. They never filed a silent STA with the FCC. I'm amazed they haven't been caught but then again Paulino Bernal has about 15 stations off the air and they've been off the air for almost 4 years now and he's not been caught or cited by the FCC either. Go figure...

I don't know about that. 107.9 was clear, they have a bad hum in the background like a ground was messed up in the sound board or something, and on 103.1 I hear that same hum and Spanish format. It was interfering badly with 102.9 on 103.1. There was ESPN radio on 103.3 also on 96.1, but 103.3 was off the air.

I know for sure it's not KHHL, KHHL broadcasts in mono and is almost never broadcasting any audio, or if it did it would cut out and be very distorted. I think something is going on with the 103.3 in Corpus. They must of changed it around to simulcast 107.9 and moved it over to 103.1. Maybe by accident? If not KNDA should look into that.

Actually, nope. KHHL 103.1 is silent half the time, the other half the time they're broadcasting distorted, off and on audio. They really should just turn the transmitter off as it's probably better that way. :)

My thoughts exactly BMP needs to either sell that station and some one who knows how to run it keep it going, or turn it off.

I have no idea what your radio was picking up. 107.9 is off the air. What part of Corpus Christi did you pick it up at? Even when they were on the air illegally off the wrong tower the only place you could really hear it was the far west side of Corpus Christi or near the airport. I listened today and there is nothing but static on 103.1 and KVLY in Edinburg, TX was coming in and out on 107.9 FM. Again, I think you heard KHHL on 103.1 and KQQK on 107.9 when you were down here.

How long ago was this that you were down here? 103.3 and 96.1 haven't been ESPN for a while now. The ESPN station here in Corpus Christi is now 1440 KEYS.

I was down this weekend, off on Shoreline drive I'm pretty sure it was not KQQK, I know for a fact it wasn't KHHL.

96.1 was broadcasting a sports network, but I was not sure what network they were broadcasting.

Aren't they running Yahoo! Sports Radio (formerly Sporting News Radio)?

Indeed 96.1 Corpus Christi (Actually K241AT in Flour Bluff) simulcasts 103.3 (K277BL Corpus Christi) off the air. Both of these translators relay KSIX (AM 1230) Corpus Christi. As Infamous stated, 107.9 has been off the air for a couple of years and has NEVER been legally licensed. They have tried a couple of times to get licensed where they were broadcasting from, but it wasn't allowed so they were shot down. They've been silent for quite a while.

KSIX does run Yahoo Sports Radio (Although they are pretty local during daytime hours.) They run a local show 5:30-9A.. Dan Patrick 9-noon Jime Rome noon to 3 and local from 3-6.

I believe I have solved the " 103.1" and "107.9" simulcast mystery.

I'm going to guess you were pretty close to CC downtown. (As in a circle around downntown no larger than from there to the intersection of SPID and Crosstown.) I'm also going to guess you heard a pretty loud hum in the background of both of these stations.

What you didn't notice was they were also "Simulcasting" 105.5 (Which sounded normal.)

Does this fit the facts?

If so you have heard a couple of loud spurs from 105.5 FMm KLHB. I know the KSIX folks have been screaming about those spurs to KLHB for a while. If you notice they are both 2.4 megahertz from the main transmitterof 105.5. As in 105.5+2.4=107.9 - 105.5 - 2.4=103.1. This has been effectively wiping out KSIX's 103.3 downtown. (And I know they were SERIOUSLY pissed)

A couple of weeks ago, the 105.5 main transmitter mercifully died. A lot of details later, they are using a new emergency replacement transmitter which works properly. 107.9 and 103.1 are now clear.

103.3 can be heard downtown. I am told KLHB is replacing the 105.5 transmitter as it is not worth replacing.

All appears normal...

Hope this clears things up...

Clouseau

That must explain it then. Yes I was on Shoreline drive, pretty well close to downtown. I knew I wasn't crazy or drunk about this one :)
I bet KNDA was pretty pissed about that also, because I could not pick them up at all. my portable radio is a pretty decent radio, picks almost as good as my truck does.

That's a fascinating story. Thanks, Inspector Clouseau!
