103.1 KHHL, the ugly stepsister from Alpha's cluster of stations, is dead air. For a few months, the audio on it has been off and on, and now it's completely off. It's as if their Internet connection at KHHL's transmitter site is not good, and for a few days now when I've tuned by it, no sound has been on at KHHL, yet the transmitter is still running away wasting electricity.

The day KHHL becomes a decent station is probably the day Alpha decides to sell it.

Even if Alpha sells it, it probably won't become a decent station. It's not really a San Antonio, a Corpus, or a Victoria stick, and there aren't enough people or businesses in its coverage area for it to make a lot of money. It would have to be run on the cheap in order to be profitable.

The station also can't be moved into San Antonio, Corpus, or Austin. Not sure about Victoria, but it might have a better chance as a weak San Antonio rimshot than a strong Victoria station. That market doesn't do much in terms of revenue.

Looking at their 60 dbu, they can easily run a profitable radio station with an efficient sales staff. I have worked many small market stations that covered lots fewer people and much smaller business communities. It would be reasonable for such a station to bill about $20,000 a month with some hard work. Sure it might be primarily automated but that is par for the course for the small town station.

I don't think they want to change it from ESPN Deportes though, and in any case it's back on with the audio.

The continuing dropouts have been reported to the FCC.
maybe they will do something since Alpha doesn't seem to care about it.

If that's the case, Alpha Media should simulcast G103.3.
