103.1 WGNYFM is now WJGK

Noticed flipping through the dial that after many years the legal id for the Fox has changed from WGNYFM to WJGK, which Sunrise owned for the station it never built.

According to the FCC, the call sign changed on October 27.
WGNY-FM was used since 1984.

I wonder why they changed the calls now. The were just granted a CP for 98.9 Rosendale.

You may have just landed on it...Dollars to donuts, 98.9 becomes WGNY-FM. If that's the case, since they bothered with the swap in the first place, I'd venture to guess 98.9 becomes a simulcast of 1220/WGNY which gets Van back on FM.

I'll have to check, 98.9 is going to be an oldies station in Rosedale which is a simulcast of WGNY-AM at 1220. I hope oldies is going to return after a 4-year absence from WBPM's former "Cool 92.9". I hope oldies will do a lot better on FM. WEOK still has "True Oldies" on, but it has an okay signal, but it is horrible at night when it comes in from different stations elsewhere. I hope I can check it out, but if not, 98.9 in Rosedale is not on the air yet.

Wonder if it had anything to do with 103.1 in Albany becoming WGY-FM? You had WGY-FM and WGNY-FM both on 103.1 and adjacent to each other.

Bingo! I didn't think of that .Now your theory makes sense. While they don’t interfere with each other they are rather short spaced. I couldn't understand why they would change long held calls, especially without a format change

According to Scott Fybush that Sunrise Broadcasting has installed calls on its new 98.9 construction permit in Rosendale, and as expected, that station will be WGNY-FM now that the former WGNY-FM at 103.1 which is still WJGK. I hope this format will be consider doing an oldies format or maybe a simulcast of WJGK at 103.1 which is AC format. Remember WGNY-FM was at 97.3 when it got covered by "The Wolf" about a year and a half ago. That was a translator to put WGNY-FM on 97.3 which was a bad decision not to do a simulcast of WGNY-FM.

As for 98.9 in Rosendale, they're not on the air yet, but I hope if this format will get splatter by a WKZE simulcast at 99.1 in Red Hook which is about 2 kcs up the dial. I mentioned on this thread a few days ago about WKZE being simulcast on 99.1. I found a link to this one here to check it out.

Well so far I was right, I guess you can bet on that simulcast now.

Although listed as licensed by the FCC Poughkeepsie translator 97.3 apparently has gone off the air. I had not noticed, but I doubt it was a year and a half ago. It was rather unnecessary IMO because 103.1 buts a decent signal into Poughkeepsie. Although it’s quite possible, they use 98.9 to simulcast WJGK especially since they put the WGNY calls there, I don’t see the silencing of 97.3 as a prelude to that because it’s likely to take Sunrise at least a year to get the new station on the air.

The owner of Sunrise is so full of himself the new call letters are his initials. WJGK. Joerg G. Klebe

I wonder what they will do with 96.7 WTSX since it is being moved SW to Lehman Twp, PA to make way for WCTZ who is about to move just north of NYC.
