103.1 WMXX is now "Kool Mix"

Flipping through the dial tonight and noticed that 103.1 now identifies itself as "KOOL MIX 103.1" at the top of the hour, mostly 70s and 80s have been airing. "Captain Jack" is on weekdays from 6 to noon as well apparently.

Sounds like they did some tweaking, maybe dropping 60s, as they were doing 60s, 70s and 80s ten years ago.

Do these stations have an online presence? I can't find any, other than some old links to where they may have streamed at one time.

Nothing that I can find.

I saw this posted a day or two ago by WNWS:

Hunt Radio Properties, LLC – 103.1 FM & WDXI 1310 AM/103.5 FM – and Grace Media Group Inc., have entered into a partnership agreement under the umbrella of West Tennessee Media Group, which will not only allow each company to sell and market radio advertising for the entire group but will also include newly developed opportunities in media avenues such as billboards, TV and all digital media sources.

Hunt Radio Propalso owns “The WORM” 101.7 FM, and 1010 AM in Savannah.

“We feel that this partnership will allow clients the opportunity to deal with one company (West Tennessee Media Group) to handle the bulk of their advertising needs,” said Lacy Ennis, president/CEO of Grace Media Group.

Stations under the Grace Media Group umbrella include NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM, 93.1 FM, La Poderosa 105.3 FM and WNWS.COM., among other West Tennessee entities.

Good idea in today's landscape. Wonder if this may lead to a buyout on one side down the road.

103.1 is playing more stuff that weren't big hits that I haven't heard in years. Yesterday I heard them play Ghost Riders in the Sky by the Outlaws. Was that ever a big hit? They definitely don't always play the hits from the decades they cover, and it had been that way to some extent before the changes.

That version peaked in the #31 position in the 80s. Some people would call their choices of songs eclectic. I'd call it "We like it so we're playing it". Kind of like Gerald's entire ownership. His toy, his rules. Always done it his way.

That almost sounds like Jack FM's slogan of Playing what we want. :D

In listening in recent weeks I've heard more stuff I haven't heard in years, but I actually like it most of the time. I'd guess most of the stuff like borderline elevator music they played in the past is on 103.5 now.

Do they play anything that sounds like it could have been a local hit back in the day? I remember that stations used to do that before playlists got so tight.

Yes some of it was songs that were a local hit at one time, but don't get played in normal oldies or classic hits formats. I couldn't name any particular songs though.

I liked those songs, because they always gave stations a certain "character" that maybe other stations didn't have. I have managed to find a few 45s of songs like these (almost always on indie labels) on ebay. Probably still a few others like those out there that I would also like to find.
