103.3 WODS officially done with "Oldies?"

Let's face it-WODS will consign the holiday music to one of its HD channels.

Why would they? It gets good ratings for them.

Also, their HD-2 Channel is already playing soft-rock as "The Cove".

And, if I understand this correctly, HD-3's must be in Mono?

WOGL in Philly just put all xmas on the HD-2 instead of the usual "All 70's." So it's not outside the realm of possibility....and would be a nice way to entice people to buy an HD radio if they want their holiday fix fulltime without hurting the regular format.

WODS gets a ratings boost, signficantly above their regular format, every winter when they go "holiday" music, so it makes sense for WODS to put it on their main channel. Maybe that doesn't happen for WOGL. If not, it would make more sense for WOGL to put it on an HD-2. I don't watch the Philly ratings, so I don't know how "holiday" music has worked for them in the past, but I know it works very well for WODS.

I understand that when Christmas music was on WOGL's main signal, the response was reasonable. However, another station in the market, the former "Now 97.5", had went all-holiday hits after Halloween, and it was quite a ratings boon for them, although not enough to dethrone the established B101.

Regardless, I still don't know why they'd want to place Christmas music on the HD2 channel of WOGL, especially since, as I have previously stated, most businesses are not equipped with HD Radio technology. (The same can be argued for most people, too, but that's another story...) Unless CBS has intentions to change another of their stations to all-Christmas... WYSP, perhaps?

WODS has been Boston's xmas station for awhile now, so it would make sense for them flip the main channel to All Xmas....and hope that WROR doesn't beat them to it.

Personally, I think the WOGL HD-2 Xmas is a placeholder for the Xmas tunes until they put it on the main channel - and as a way to entice people to buy HD Radios if they want their Ho Ho Ho fix early. Hell, even as a heathen Jew I was listening to it last night and it sounded like a nice mix of tunes. And last year HD came in handy when the regular format went to the HD-2. Maybe if the Phillies win the world series they'll flip soon.

In the days before PPM, it might've been important to be the first to play Xmas music. This went a long way toward branding yourself as THE Xmas station. Remember : in the days of diaries, it was all about 'perception.' These days, a station will benefit by being the BEST Xmas station (and keep listeners tuned in longer). Further: someone might
even want to TELL the audience ahead of time WHEN EXACTLY they'll be playing their
first Xmas song. This sets an appointment (a key in today's ppm world).

If WODS put the Holiday music on an HD subcarrier channel this year, it would be a bad move on their part. Holiday music always gives their ratings a significant boost, plus IMO, HD Radio has not made enough of a bang yet for CBS to do this with an annual tradition like this, it's simply not the same.

HD Radio IS the future.... it just isn't popular yet, especially in frugal New England.

Also, distribution of receivers is still poor. While Best Buy was heavily advertising the new Insignia HD walkman-type portable, it wasn't even in stock at their stores in Cambridge, Back Bay, Fenway, or Watertown, and only the Cambridge store even had a rack display space and price tag designated for it. I had to go out to the Framingham store to buy the only one that they had in stock.

Both Now and WOGL attempted to knock off the established Christmas station in Philly, B101 last year. But, all three stations had different music mixes. Now skewed more contemporary, with mostly tracks from the 80's to the present. WOGL was more oldies based with mostly standards along with Motown and soul style holiday songs. Each station did OK, but B101 played a little bit of everything (the big holiday hits from Bing to Britney) and they came out on top. Obviously Now is gone, so both WOGL and B101 should pretty much do the same thing this time around. At least both stations target their Christmas formats to appeal to their regular target demos they go for the rest of the year.

Boston is a little different. Both WROR and WODS essentially air similar music, and they skew more contemporary than their regular formats. WROR didn't do as well as WODS did with it last year, so you'd think they would consider keeping their regular format. However, WROR's billing may have gone up even though their ratings didn't, so most likely they'll do the holiday thing again this year...
