103.5 Huntsville is on the air

I heard it last night playing christmas music. They put a good signal into Cullman. Never did hear an ID or anything. Any ideas on what they may be after the holidays? I vote for a true AOR station, although I know that will never happen. Good day!

You are correct sir. They are on the air, but they are only testing the frequency right now. There are still no call letters for the station yet. It has a great signal in Huntsville. I think it is very smart for them to start out stunting with christmas music through the holidays and debut the station when the holidays are over with the official format. They will catch alot of listeners attention with the christmas music. It's a big ratings maker every year.

OK I retract my previous statement LOL. They have gone ahead and launched the new format and name. As of this evening they are playing hip hop and R&B and calling the station Hot 103-5 Huntsville's new home for the hottest hits with 10,000 songs in a row. They IDed the station at the top of the hour but I missed what the call letters were. I'll have to catch it on the next top of the hour because the FCC database still doesn't show any calls for the station yet. Looks like WEUP has new competition.

Update: Just heard the top of the hour ID. They are IDing as WHWT New Hope, Huntsville. So if this station is on the air, is the other station in Pine Level on the air as well?

Yeah, I heard that WEUP has competition once again. Is HOT 103.5 a Rhythmic or Urban station? Who are the owners?

Not in any position to know what 103.5 sounds like, but I do know they're owned by Al Stroh of Stroh Communications. Local [Montgomery] Alabama owner.

Anyone know if a staff has been hired? I could use a new job and a change in scenery...

Is this new station close enough to the signal of Hot 107.7 in Birmingham? If it is, I would imagine Citadel will issue a cease and desist order for them to change the new stations name.

That's true. WEUP had competition once back in 2003 against Power 93.3, but 93.3 around 2005-2006, they changed their format to just R&B, without no hard hitting rap. I hope the new New Hope-Huntsville station doesn't fall like Power 93.3, because after it lost to WEUP, there was no "power" to it anymore.

Actually whats funny about that is, Power 93.3 never lost to WEUP. They beat WEUP in the ratings EVERY trend and book. But cumulus thought they could make more money targeting adults only with urban A/C so they flipped. Big mistake for cumulus. That idea backfired.

The station is a small 290 watt signal and it does not over lap Hot 107-7 so I'm sure they are in the clear with using the Hot name. You can see the city grade map here http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1190897.html. Funny the FCC still shows the station as "New". No calls. If you look up the WHWT calls on the FCC website it says "No records retrieved". No website I've seen shows these calls yet. Are they still officially testing the signal? I know you get an allotted amount of time to test a new signal before you officially list calls and have to ID at the top of the hour.

Does anyone know if Stroh's other station at Pine Level is on the air yet as well?

Zach, Yes the transator licensed to Madison is now off the air.

Namric, I noticed the same thing, but I also noticed that they are adding music little by little each day so i assume the reason for the repetitiveness is because they haven't finished adding all the music into their system yet. Atleast, I hope that is it. They are very heavy hip hop with very little r&b. If they stay repetitive like they are now, they will never beat WEUP. They're new so it's gonna take them a while to get to where they need to be.

Hotseat, thanks. I assume since Stroh's new Huntsville station is on the air, the new Pine Level one isn't far behind.

LOL yea that's true. I remember when WEUP used to say "always plays atleast 18 songs in a row" but everyone always used to say "always plays the same 18 songs in a row" LOL.

The station's calls are finally listed on the FCC database. Radio-locator.com has it as well but it shows the station as "currently off the air" although it's not.

Yea they are sounding MUCH better than their first days on the air. I already hear a lot of people talking about it around the city and they are liking it so far. I've noticed they are playing a few more "rhythmic" style selections that you don't hear on WEUP. I think that's very smart. They need to show everyone what they are offering that is different from the competition.
