103.7 HAS GONE COUNTRY !

Randy Wright is the host for the WUFT broadcast of the homecoming parade on WUFT-TV. When the Country1037 pickup truck came by, he gave a two minute talk about the "Brand New" Country1037 and its new morning drive talent "Audrey" who was riding in the bed of the truck.

The flip was the most god awful boring flip I've EVER heard... I only wish I could have recorded it.

yikes...

I missed the Country 103-7 truck. Do they have banners and everything already?

Sportsfans - I have listened to the The New Country 103.7, The Gator over the past few hours, and, although the music mix sounds good, overall WRUf-FM sounds like a 100kw jukebox. This is often common with a new station, so that, in and of itself, is no big surprise to me. However, we are now in PM drive and still no jock; only liners and music. Drive-time should have someone local-live from the start.

I've also only heard one local commercial as the rest are national ads, most likely holdovers from Rock 104. I would think the air staff would have already been lined-up and ready to go before the switch in addition to having the format pre-sold with sponsors ready to go before the first country song ever hit the 103.7 airwaves. I'm sure this format change was in the planning stages for months which gave them plenty of time to have all their metarphoric "ducks in a row". That's how I would have done it.

Overall, it doesn't sound bad.

Has 100.5 responded in any way on-air (welcoming Rock 104 listeners or the like)?

WRUF certainly hasn't done anything with the website. The "Now Playing" on Rock104 would be confusing to anyone not in the know. You'd think they'd at least have a place-holder ready. ???

I haven't listened to The Buzz, so I don't know what they are doing. However, I would think they woud take advantage of the situation. Wind-FM, on the other hand, is taking advantage and has given reference to the change. This was posted on my Facebook wall earlier today by Wind-FM's program director Kevin "Crash" Davis. It's catchy. I actually like it...

i just removed 103.7 from my preset. Still can't pick up 100.5 on my clock radio. Where's Rock 100 WDIZ or 95 YNF when you need it??!!!!

Another victim of corporate greed and/or some lame consultant.......

Not all consultants are bad. I'm a consultant and I have actually helped stations to succeed; having consulted and turned around several underperforming stations over the course of my 35-years in the business.

I cannot speak for UF nor can I give an accurate answer as to why they felt compelled to change format on WRUF-FM. I'm sure they have their reasons which make good business sense to them. I disagree, on the surface, but, then, again, I am not privy to the information that UF has at its disposal which it used in making the decision to make the recent changes. Although I, personally, will miss Rock 104, I do wish UF and the new Country 103.7, The Gator much success in the competitve market place.

In the end, it's about the bottom line....

As an owner and operator, one has to consider the bottom line. Otherwise there will be no "bottom line" revenue to operate the station(s) in which case said station management has no choice but to a) sell the station; or, b) shut it down. It costs big dollars to operate and break even with a 100kw FM. I've owned stations throughout my career and I can safely say the bottom line was always my main concern.

Again, I cannot speak for anyone at UF nor WRUF-FM. I'm only speaking generically at the moment and not directly in reference to any specified station nor group.

Well, it's certainly not corporate greed since this is a government owned facility. The political ramifications would make an interesting discussion all unto themselves.....

A former GM at WRUF, Jim Geason, once told me that there are no bad decisions except the failure to make a decision. While not entirely something I agree with, his point was that, if you make a bad decision, simply make another decision to change it. If they have made a bad decision, it'll become clear in time and they will eventually change again. It's not the end of the world.

Jim Geason, great guy. He took over after Bob Leach as I recall. Leach was a whack job. Once chewed me out because I didn't answer the hotline in less than 3 rings. Alcohol is a bad thing.....

Leach used to call up on Friday nights and would yell at anyone that failed to pick up on one or two rings. I got chewed out once because I was live on the air reading a PSA and didn't answer until the fifth ring. Leach screamed and hung up the phone when I tried to explain.

Real jackass. He cussed me out for wearing a WGVL t-shirt. Friggin loser......probably choked on a martini

Heart attack, I think. I recall it was sudden. Could have been that he was a nice guy once. Just too stressed out and didn't know how to handle it.

"stressed out"? You are a GM at a state owned radio station, you aren't going anywhere (see Harry Guscott), you get tenure, you are the ONLY game in town, etc....

Treating people badly is never acceptable or excusable.

No disagreement. I wasn't too broken up about his passing.

People like him give radio a black eye. Too many ill tempered PD, GM's, GSM's who couldn't suceed in anything else in life made radio their career. They made some money, got greedy, lost their cool and would think bad behavior was ok. Sad, very sad. Clearly, most in radio worked for a jackass at one time or another.
