103.7 KOSF moves off Sutro?

Probably old news but I see a CP (dated 01/2012) for 103.7 KOSF to move off of Sutro to Mt. San Bruno.

What's the driving force behind this move?

I'm no engineer, but I'd guess if they are moving it's to get better San Jose coverage. Looking at the coverage maps on radio locator, it would seem a move to San Bruno would give them a stronger San Jose signal more like KSAN and KITS.

So....does this means KOSF will lose their Grandfather power?

Well, THAT's not much to speak of. Compare 106.9 with 80kw (before the FCC limited Class B to 50kw) and KOSF, which is 7200 watts. I'm not sure when they got the reduction, probably when they moved from the Sutro mansion antenna to Sutro Tower.

Anyhow, they're not gaining a heck of a lot by moving to Mt. San Bruno, except possibly more southeast bay coverage at the expense of losing the growing Santa Rosa area. I'm not sure 6800 or whatever watts from Bruno is going to reach SJ very well.

Maybe it's money. Since 103.7 is no longer co-owned with KGO-TV (one of the Sutro Tower owners), maybe the lease prices have gone up so high as to not make it worth being up there. Remember that when KCSM-TV was kicked off Bruno by KNTV's move there from Loma Prieta in the days just before DTV took over, KCSM-TV couldn't afford to operate both an analog site and their new digital Sutro site, so they operated what amounted to a small exciter on the CSM campus in order to secure their channel during the transition. Sutro's expensive.

If KOSF moving from Sutro Tower to San Bruno Mtn, is KISQ 98.1 next?

KISQ has a great site and relatively new antenna on Beacon. Been there, seen it, nice site!

Plus they're grandfathered class B @ 75Kw. They'd be crazy, not a chance.

Agree, this is going to help coverage into San Jose a little but not enough for it to be the sole driving force. As mentioned above, it's probably money.

Side bar: When that station was KKSF (back in 2000ish), I remember driving through the city admiring how clean the audio was. Knew the chief at the time, he had a good ear.

I heard that TV and radio signals from Mount Sutro cannot reach San Jose well. I remember KFOG 104.5 had to get 97.7 San Jose to reach the Santa Clara Valley audience.

I spent my youth growing up in San Jose with a roof top antenna and remember getting all of the TV stations on Sutro without issue. However that was in the "analog days" so I don't know if things have changed.

I thought the acquisition of 97.7 was to get better building penetration into the San Jose market and fill in coverage better. I was living in San Jose at that time and followed that acquisition closely.

It's all part of the master plan! 49er's move to Santa Clara, Warriors move to San Francisco, KOSF moves from Sutro.
The last piece of the plan is for the A's to move.

hahahahahahaha!! I hear KOSF is going to start carrying 49er games in the fall hence the move from Sutro.

Sorry, couldn't resist feeding the rumor mill.

As I understand it, grandfathering isn't as cut and dried as it used to be. There's quite a bit of leeway in changing sites. It's probably been this way for 20 years or so.

Did KOSF just move off of Sutro Tower? Because when I went inside MUNI Forest Hill Station, KOSF is non-existent vs. KOIT 96.5, KSOL 98.9, and KFOG 104.5 which all broadcast from Sutro Tower.

Might just be doing work on the main and running on an aux at lower power. That sort of thing happens from time to time.
