KVIL has dropped their "Lite FM" logo, and now they're known as "103.7 KVIL" playing songs from the 90's & today.

Wow..They went Hot AC

Don't know that just because you drop stuff older than 1990 that you are automatically considered Hot AC. Time is marching on, and pretty soon 70s/80s will be pretty much relegated to classic hits formats. I would think it may have more to do with presentation style than musical years (AC vs Hot AC). Also, I would think Hot AC's should pretty soon be ditching the 90s for just 2K & Today.

I noticed something different this morning on 103.7 Lite FM while I was driving to school, err..., they're back to 103.7 KVIL, but except they're not the KVIL like they had it when I start listening to them in 2003 when I was 11.

WLTW 106.7 Lite FM in New York, which everybody claimed that was too upbeat for AC, still plays all of the hits from The Bee Gees, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Vanessa Williams along with the currents from Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, so I'm pretty KVIL here in DFW had truly made WLTW in NY too easy listening. :p

KODA Sunny 99.1 from Houston and Magic 104.1 KMGL from Oklahoma City are still playing 70s and 80s music.

KVIL has basically became the KDMX of the 90s :) they are even using the similar slogan to them as well as KDMX used to be 80s, 90s, and today :p

I believe former PD Nikki Nite said in 2006 that the KVIL calls were perceived by the listeners as your mother's (or grandmother's) station. *WE* all know the heritage there, but who of us here are in their target demo? And their target demo was probably still in diapers when Ron Chapman ruled the airwaves there, and have no idea of the significance or history (nor care about it.)

I have a question. Why stations like KVIL and KLUV, adjust their format to fit their target demos, but urban ac's refuse to do it? When I started posting on here, I was still listening to mainstream urban. I've now gotten older and have moved toward the urban ac demo, but I feel like urban ac hasn't made the "adjustment" to fit me, who is now part of their target demo. Urban AC is still stuck in the 70's and 80's and people like me, who want to hear the 90's and today's R&B are left out in the cold. What I'm trying to say is, that I've grown a little too old for mainstream urban, but I'm too young for what urban ac is playing, I feel like my age group is left out in the cold.

And one more question. When do music from a certain era is no longer considered urban ac and is now considered an urban oldie?

It looks like KVIL is somewhat following the footsteps of former "Fresh" station WCFS-FM in Chicago while keeping it's "Adult Contemporary" format. I've read the article from Radio Insight and it hasn't said anything about switching from AC to Hot AC officially. Though they did indeed retool the format.

I'm taking a look at their playlist and in addition to some of the songs they already have during the "Lite FM" era, they put in...

- Neon Trees' "Animal"
- Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life"
- The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" (my favorite since the late 1990s)
- Tonic's "If You Can Only See"
- Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks"
- Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge"
- Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts"

...songs not normally heard on an AC station.

KVIL needs to dump Delilah, she does not fit the direction KVIL is making.

They have really been throwing in a lot variety as they have been playing:

Smash mouth
Lisa Loeb (stay)
goo goo dolls
numerous other 90s songs

but I think that they are more of a three decade AT40 station now instead of AC or hot AC.

It looks like they've scaled her back because they're only running her bits into and out of breaks. So, I wouldn't be surprised if CBS follows some of its other AC's that have dropped her or relegated her to overnights. I'm thinking aside from Palm Springs, Dallas is the only place where CBS carries her these days. They dropped her in Cleveland and St. Louis last year, and, except on weekends, she's been relegated to overnights on WRCH for several years.

Thanks guys for giving your insight on my questions.... Guess I'll go to the URBAN board now.... ::)

Maybe none of us have the answers to your questions. I rarely listen to KSOC (Urban Oldies) and KRNB (Urban AC) as they both go intermittently static while I'm on the go...at least where I'm at in Irving.

Well that custom jingle package from ReelWorld went to waste. I think it only got 4 months of air play. Anybody know if the new KVIL will have jingles?

To me KVIL still sounds AC just freshen up a bit. They aren't going to sound the same they did in 1999 for example in 2013. I wouldn't call them Hot AC as they don't sound like 94.7 Fresh FM in Washington D. C. or Fresh 102.7 NYC. I am surprised they didn't call the station Fresh 103.7 like CBS did in St. Louis which CBS just rebranded as they already have a Hot AC owned station in the market.

I put an ear on it for quite some time Friday. Strange as it may sound, I knew very little of the music, yet, liked what I heard.

Smart move.
The KVIL name still has a lot of value in this market, and I never understood why it was dropped.
We ride in several carpools with ages 30 to 60, and invarably the FM dial gets switched
to several stations --- talk - country - rock - classical and SOMEONE objects "I can't STAND that
music" and someone -- oddly, usually one of the younger ones -- still says "put on KVIL" (and NEVER
referred to it as "lite rock 103.7)

I haven't listened to KDMX or any Hot AC's much since 2010, but it's nice hearing some of the 90's and 00's variety on KVIL like "Come Undone" by Duran Duran, "One Headlight" by The Wallflowers, "If You Could Only See" by Tonic, and even a hell lot more even though I'm not getting to hear 70's and 80's on KVIL like it is before, not unless I tune into KJKK or KLUV, but KVIL really picked out some really good 90's and 00's songs as KDMX is slowly giving them up to pick up the recurrent left over by KHKS, I think since I haven't listened to KDMX much since then.

This is a good way for KLUV and KJKK to fork the 35-54 demos left out by their sister KVIL, KVIL to fork the 25-44 demos left out by their competitor KDMX, and KDMX to fork the 25-34 demos left out by their sister KHKS.
