103.7 The River

Mix has been a failure since it became B103.7 after old ownership dropped the successful Soft AC EZ104 when 106.5 flipped from NPR to WVMX or Mix 106. I think Cox uses the "River" for robojocked Classic Hits and will be marketed with WDYL and WKLR.

Oh, but the Richmond format changes may not be over!
100.9/Y101's website (www.y101rocks.com) shows no jocks, and features a huge "1037 The River" logo in the center. VARTV says "CHR?? Stay tuned"
Hot1009.com was registered by an employee at Cox a few days ago.

Facts above, opinion now. It makes perfect sense! Cox is getting this right. Y101 is not going to be beat WRXL. Alternative was big in the 90's in Richmond, so you have a new 90's-heavy Alternative to fill it's own niche.

As far as 100.9, CHR also makes perfect sense. They didn't steal Melissa Chase away from Q94 for nothing!

Well, true about Chase, but if they are gonna go CHR on 100.9 and use Melissa on-air, why did Fisher leave his PD post at WMXB (now WURV) and hand it over to Melissa so he could PD WDYL? Just wondering......

The 103.7 downfall took awhile, but it's been in the toilet now for several years.

1) 1988 was the year WRFK went off the air, NPR/Classical went to WCVE-FM, first at a temporary signal, then later to its permanent home at 88.9. The new owners of 106.5 created Mix 106, which generated alot of buzz for awhile, and then it died down, and, well, eventually died.

2) Almost the same day 106.5 changed in 1988, the then "EZ104" (WEZS) made a pre-emptive move, to "The New B 103-7, The Best Mix of Yesterday and Today". MXB did rather well until someone decided to take Bill Bevins off AM drive and replace him with Mike McCarthy. Disaster.

3) Not long after that, Bevins bolts for Lite 98, where he's been for almost 15 years now. MXB, on the other hand, struggles to replace him and only enjoys a renaissance of sorts around 10 years ago during the "Bender" era.

4) They put a coat of paint on the same format a couple of times during the last decade, trying to brand it as "new". Saying "new" after 18 months is ridiculous. I don't blame Jack and Jen for the eventual ending of Mix 103.7; they were the only ones with any personality there. The other 148 hours of the week they played the same songs over and over and told you about their commercial-free "drive at five". That was ALL they had to promote?!? Really sad.

The new River will have a shot a some ratings success and should see a spike. The problem will be when 200 songs overstay there welcome and reach the burn rate. They will sit and sit and the powers that be will wonder what happened. It was time to get rid of the "New Mix." (Weren't they new for like 5 years or something?) Cox has a history of not doing AC radio well especially in markets where there are formidable competitors in the same or similar formats. Basically mix was a jukebox with the same tired crap playing and the drive at 5 mentioned every minute it seemed. The Jack & Jen show the Fisher show or Bill Bevins moving to the 103.7 morning show slot couldn't fix that mess. Cox has a shot with the the new 103.7. Sadly I think this format has about 2 years.

CHR on 100.9? Sounds like it could happen. A David and Goliath. Cox tried it by putting Mix against Lite 98. Dumb move. This would be a similar scenario. Where is my pandora?

should be interesting to see what happens here. I am not from this area, what CHR's/Hot A/C's are already in this area?

I do believe Fisher has some CHR programming background, but I'm not positive. It's certainly possible to have Chase be on-air at a 100.9 CHR, while PD of another station in the cluster.

As far as other CHR's, WRVQ/Q94 is owned by Clear Channel and has been doing CHR since the early 70's. Huge signal and a ton of history. However, they certainly have their weak spots. The biggest being one live jock, afternoons.
Cox does CHR well. Look at WBLI and WAPE.

Fisher has alot of experience with CHR. HE worked at WBLI , then went to Houston TX and launched HOT 97-1 and finally moved to Greenville SC where he launched HOT 98-1 and was PD there for several years before coming to MIX. So yess he has plenty of experience.

looks like groove1009.com is registered for richmond... possible WDYL is attempting party/dance format like KPTT? that format could do really well in the market...

Smartest move in Richmond radio in years, I say.

It was a matter of time before somebody had to blink. I must say though, I was quite suprised Y-101 lasted basically 8 years with heavy competition on a much better signal.

I'd imagine just by having Y-101 and Mix gone, 103.7 has to do pretty well...plus, didn't 106.5 do pretty well as a AAA before the Buzz took the signal over?
