103.7 WVEI-FM Audio

As I was driving around Rhode Island this weekend, the thought occurred to me that the audio processing (or lack thereof) on WEEI affiliate 103.7 WVEI-FM Westerly/Providence sounds awfully similar to the audio of WLNE Channel 6, when it used to be heard on 87.7 or 87.9 FM. Muddy with no real dynamics. The Red Sox games themselves sound like they're being played at a little league field as the crowd noise can barely be heard. By comparison, flagship 93.7 WEEI-FM Lawrence/Boston has more "punch" and is better compressed, and you don't have to turn your volume way up like you do on 103.7. In market #43, you'd think that Entercom would make a 50-kw equivalent FM sound a bit better, but I guess it falls in line with the low expectations of the Providence market.

Something's up, I live in RI and the station's been noticeably flat in the past few weeks, it's definitely not typical of how they've sounded since '04. It's especially noticeable when the HD locks in. Btw, their HD signal is pretty killer.

I'm pretty sure they have been having issues with their STL. Their audio has sounded much worse in recent weeks, with irregular bouts of dead air, though the carrier is still on when they go dead.
