103.9 Dundee is now The Fox!

First post here, but read the board almost daily.

Here at work, this is the only frequency I can get on the FM dial. So needless to say, I listened to Y103.9 all day. I actually liked it, and it became a station the Wife and I could agree on (as she loves country and I hate it), when we were in the car together. One thing I hated was the all day Tom Kent syndicated programing. The station went downhill drastically once they got rid of all the local talent, namely Jeff James. And they'd murder the show on cut ins and news breaks, etc.

Around 2:45 today, I knew something was wrong. They played "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel, followed up my "Mercy Me". Not only is that a train wreck, but it was identical to what they played an hour before in the exact order.

At 3, I heard a new bumper then the new music, then after that, Ben Hermin came on as a live DJ.

So far I like what they're playing. It's all 70's and 80's classic rock and hits. AC/DC Back in Black, Moody Blues, and now U2 where the streets have no name. And since they're doing Alice Cooper on weekends, I definetely am interested. I also like the station imaging.

Ben Hermin needs a lot of polishing, but... They were also off the air for around 30 minutes in the 4 O'clock hour.

About the only thing I will miss from the Tom Kent run station are "loving life living the 80's" and the 70's show. Both of which are an hour devoted to those decades. Other than that, all those damn stupid PSA's from "we all need to get together and hug one another..." to jock itch notices, I won't miss (they were nearly the entire block of commercials at each break. Add in some Josef's marketplace, the lawyer commercial with the attorney female who doesn't sound older than 15, and the last person I would trust my divorce to, or the pet boarding place with the other 15 year old, scratchy voiced voice over chick, and you have all the commercials wrapped up on the station). Oh, and the annoying "It's Official" HVAC commercial! I certainly won't miss him (Tom Kent), going into the vault and playing a song I just heard in the last hour, and I sure as hell won't miss the "inspirational poet". Steve Kent is too DJ'ey, and his daughter doing mid-afternoons wasn't much better. So yea, I won't miss any of the TKRN.

Tom Kent was (and I can't believe I felt this way) but growing on me. In tha absense of Dick Biondi's Request Show,
and Jeff James incredible "Saturday Night Party", I attempted to like Tom Kent. In the 11 PM hour, they'd do "The #1 Show" which was pretty thrilling to hear some neglected mega-hits. Tom, was unfortuately, the best of his own network, and all the relatives or whatever he had doing the other dayparts were pretty awful. But, I'm not liking the rock at all.

LOL, at the 15 year old Lawyer commercial comment--- so true!!!!

So, I've been with 103.9 since they were "The Beat of The Burbs" and now it's done, in fact terrestrial radio died for me today. Hello iHome and internet commercial-free radio!

Isn't all this live talent gonna cost them a lot??? TK isn't that expensive, and their weekday girl, Marci, left earlier this year, so other than one Sunday shift for Jeff James and Carla Coulter (maybe?), they had no one. Why not have let Jeff James take a weekday position and see what the format could do for real? Speaking of him, any word on his status?

Saturday night live at the 70's with Jeffy. I'd usually be coming home from car shows, resterlizing the car, while listening to that. To me that is when the station died... when they took that away.

I'm sure it'll cost more, but sometimes you gotta break an egg to make an omelet, and I'm sorry, the TKRN overlay to the station was killing it. There was no cohesiveness.

I don't know what they're doing with Jeff. They actually had a good lineup a few years back. Jim Shea in the morning, was it Fred Winston or someone like that Mid-days, then Jeff in the PM drive. I forget who was nights. Truthfully, I never really like Marci all that much.

Ohhh, Michelle Garris (the 15 y/o attorney), commercial is playing now...

No arguements that TKRN killed the station...I was just learning to "make do" with it. I can only take so much K-Hits and some of Kent's songs were a welcome change. But you are so correct in the no "cohesiveness".

Marci wasn't bad, she grew on me. It was nice to hear a younger voice playing those songs.

Jim Shea was mornings, Jeff James moved around a lot!!! I seem to recall Ken Cocker doing weekends maybe. Carla Coulter's been doing local commercials around there forever. I seem to recall Tom Kent first appeared around late 2006 in the overnight hours.

Saturday Night 70's ==== ;D ;D ;D ;D PURE radio HEAVEN! I'll always remember Jeff spinning some of my rare requests like "Bless You" by Martha and the Vandellas, and his eclectic taste like the Percy Faith cover of "Black Magic Woman". And the retro commercials he'd play!!!! I just about died when I heard him play a 1970 CBS Promo for a new, upcoming TV show - Mary Tyler Moore!!!!!!!! Jeff is the best local talent bar-none in my opinion!

They're still having a ton of technical glitches. They just started playing "Jeremy Spoken" and about a 1/4 of the way into the song, they faded out and went to some station ID's, and cam back with "Pour some sugar on me".

Yea, Ken Cocker was who it was. JEff at one point did mornings, mid-days, and PM drive. He was truly best at the PM drive on this station (IMO anyway).

So far I'm liking it. It reminds me a little of the Blaze, combined with the Loop, and then a little 90's Q101.

We lost another "Oldies" station so it is a sad day for me. I don't understand why we need so many "Classic Rock" stations. We already have WLS, WJMK, WLUP, and WDRV. Would of been nice to have a Smooth Jazz station or a Easy Listening Station. However, I wish the station luck but will no longer listen.

This is the first I've heard of this. Another classic rock station? Really, they couldn't think of anything else? They wonder why people are listening to mobile options?

How many times can you hear the same songs by the same people on 54 stations?

Dr. Wayne and Nashville you two really summed it up best-

First, I applaud them for hiring plenty of live talent - nice to see some new jobs in radio.
However, I wish they could have tried that with the old format first.

Definately an oversaturation of Classic Rock, and everything is the same on numerous stations.

Would have LOVED a Smooth Jazz or Easy Listening Station.

As for the "mobile" comment - this honestly killed my radio listening. I'm listening to nothing but online stations as I type this in fact. Nothing appeals to me here in Chicago.

Both formats were oversaturated. Don't get me wrong, there is stuff I will miss from Y1039. But while you're all complaining about the oversaturation of classic rock, how about the fact that you can hear the same song Y1039 was just playing on KHits or WLS within 15 minutes! I could hear "Brandi" on the Y, then flip to WJMK and hear it again, then flip to 94.7 and hear it again!

Truth be told, I like this new Fox. Being a kid of the 80's, I'm actually liking a lot of what they're playing. It kinda reminds me of "the Blaze" a little. Def Leppard, Aldo Nova, Rush, etc. Ok, I will hear Rush on the Loop, but there seems to be a lot of stuff "the Fox" is playing that I don't hear often (or at all), on the Loop. Truthfully, I don't really care for the Loop that much to be honest.

So I'm not seeing the massive overlap that you guys are complaining about as "oversaturation". Problem is, you hear "classic rock" and you think that they're all playing the same exact setlist. There are many different genre's of "classic rock" and they seem to have hit one that is a little unique right now in our market.

I hear ya! I've gotten to the the point where I'd rather listen to my CB radio because it's more interesting and entertaining than commercial radio!

You bring up plenty of valid points. I should have been more clear with my feelings. "Over-saturation" in both Classic Hits and Classic Rock is definately accurate. However, the original Y103.9 and even until Jeff James "Saturday 70's ended", the station offered a few more unique sounds to Classic Hits. Saturday nights were certainly nothing like anything else on the radio!

Also, my primary listening to the station these last few months was during the 11PM hour, when Tom Kent did his hour of #1 songs. I always heard several every night that are ignored by WJMK/WLS and to a lesser extent (with 80's or rock respectively) WILV/WDRV.

I don't listen to Classic Rock really, so I can't make any playlist comparisons. However, I'm glad to hear you are hearing some unique things with the station - that's always a big plus!

Yep, officially hooked up my iPod into my iHome, and with internet access, I'm finally getting some great stuff out of a "real" radio again. Oldies, Smooth Jazz, Better Classic Hits --- quite refreshing. Too much over-saturation of EVERYTHING on the dial, and not one brings any unique flavor in my opinion.

You are right both are oversaturated. One place where you are right and wrong is about being able to hear a song on WLS and then on WJMK a few minutes later. The really bad part is that they play the same song at the same exact time on these stations. I kid you not, Higher Love by Steve Windwood came on one of them, I changed to another and it was about 30 seconds behind the first station. I was really about to rip the radio from the dash when the third station was playing it. When I
went back and forth from station 1 to 3 I really had to let it sink in that this was happening, I thought maybe I was in bizzaro world ;D ;D.

If this was a new song I could understand it, at a station that plays new music, you want to put a popular song into heavy rotation especially for pop like Beiber and Pink and younger groups, but Higher Love? People really want to hear that tired song that was not even that great when it was new, on 3 stations and at the same time?

PLEASE!!!!!! What a bad joke. I can't even remember which station was 1,2 or 3. It doesn't matter I guess since they aren't going to change. I just can't believe that this song and some others are really songs that people want to hear this much.

The way your describing the new format really doesn't sound bad. I made an assumption without all the facts. I do like the music you mentioned. It really does sound like
what The loop should be. When you say the blaze, I want to give it a try. I loved the blaze for a while.

Back to the station format, doesn't the 103.9 station in Indiana run Cooper at night? It would be a good idea for the two stations to sync the shows so that people that drive in the fringe areas could leave the station on. It would be kind of like having The Wabbit back ;)
