103.9 FM Translator K280GN Going to Relevant Radio

Mary Lopez is selling K280GN in Austin to Relevant Radio (along with Carlos Lopez's two translators in Houston). This means 103.9 will soon be simulcasting 970 AM.

This will bring an end to a disastrous recent run of this translator, which used to carry "Gospel 1060" (KFIT), until KFIT was sold and become the primary station for the Jack FM translator. "Gospel 1060 "continued originating programming for months on 103.9 FM after the sale and then continued broadcasting a carrier without any program audio. My radio stopped on a scan to a silent but modulated 103.9 FM as recently as last week.

I'm glad to see that K280GN will finally receive some care. And another nail in the coffin of AM. Directional 1000 watts on AM is just not enough.

AM in Austin can already be considered “Irrelevant Radio” outside of KLBJ 590.
I even wonder how much of the KLBJ audience is even listening on 590. I would guess more than half of it is on 99.7. I wonder if even they know the breakdown.

Probably will be even less after they downgrade 590.

There is no downgrade to the 590 day signal as it will still be 5kw non-directional, but more centrally located in the Austin urban sprawl. That new central location probably means the night drop to 350 watts will be a wash in most of the market.

I said downgrade, but I agree with you, it's probably a wash. Daytime should be better with a new ground system from a more central location, and night will be slightly worse with 1/3 the power but non-directional and again from a more central location.

I am still very doubtful how much water the 350 watts at night will carry in a very noisy market, but the current directional night signal isn't great either.

I don’t remember hearing it in Cedar Park. KTXX HD sideband could have wiped it out. I don’t think I checked it when I was in Round Rock. I know the 100.3 translator is going with RDS

Does KIXL still have the translator in Round Rock on 105.1FM? Radio-locator says it does, but just wanted to make sure.
I’ve never been able to pick it up and I’ve tried a few times, but Relevant is not going to falsely file documents, so I am sure it does actually exist.

The Lopez folks have no business owning broadcast facilities of any kind. The FCC should take action against them on any remaining properties.
