103.9 : New Format Speculation?

So, 103.9 - rumored to flip on Monday? Classic Rock?? The Eagle failed before and it has some hard competition to face...

96.3
99.7
106.7
101.1

No, those aren't all classic rock stations, but if it didn't work the first time, what's gonna happen this time?

Hopefully, CHR... but I doubt it with Hal in charge.

Re "failed before" and "will not make it," you have to look at this in relative terms with a signal like that.  It can't possibly fare any worse ratings-wise than what they're doing now.  Given that LVQ and the Brew are already CR, 103.9 would have more potential with Adult Hits again, or a highly differentiated version of CR such as upper-demo, maybe AAA-leaning.  But no matter what they do they're not going to big ratings with that  signal unless they do, say, audio porn (and of course that's not going to happen).

Hmmmm, maybe a it might happen? Will Santa be the one to drop the format wish that we have been discussing over the past couple of weeks in regards to Power/WNCI? Maybe another hip-hop station/mix. Or, Dance/Top 40 Grooves? Maybe that secret meeting is really happening. We will have to wait and see.

Given Nabco's history since Hal Fish took the programming reins over twenty years ago, I would be extremely surprised to see anything along the lines you're hoping for.

I would love a AAA similar to "Cities 97" in Minneapolis. I think there's room in the market with 106 dropping light alternative, 101 often passing on pop-leaning stuff, and 107 being a hot ac on a smaller signal.

Wilco, Sara Bareilles, Foo Fighters, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Peter Gabriel, REM. I would enjoy that mix. I'd enjoy a contemporary-only AAA too but that doesn't exist in most markets.

Something like Frequency in Cincy? That doesn't get any ratings either. I'm wondering if it sells at all. 103.9 should do a CHR spinoff, but if Hal is programming, he probably knows nothing about CHR.

Classic Rocker WOFX in Cincy was leaning upper-demo AAA and doing pretty well with it until CC had to spin it off this year.  Lots of stuff like Traffic, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Roxy Music...as well as the usual suspects like Tom Petty and John Mellencamp.  This included lots of now-largely-ignored-by-CR cuts from artists that are still heard in the format like Hendrix, Doors, Van Morrison and Elton John (think "Border Song").  I think they even played some stuff like Mamas & Papas.  But when Cumulus took over they pushed it in more of a mainstream-CR direction, probably to steer it further from other properties in the cluster.

But it sure would be nice to hear an AAA that plays the above plus new stuff and "in-betweens" like Pearl Jam, Tracy Chapman, and the artists you mention.  Not expecting that, though, and not sure how well it would do anyway.  Besides, it doesn't much matter what ends up on 103.9 or any of the other awful-to-bad signals that dominate here.  The radio situation in Columbus is pretty much hopeless, unless you are a big signal exec who enjoys the improved odds of safely coasting  to retirement in the LazyBoy Recliner of Top 100 markets.

Fyi, interesting performance of the Border Song from 1972 (and it sure looks it!):

That's the unfortunate thing about NABCO. Sure, you don't have to worry about corporate BS like you do with CC, but at least CC has a group of people working in the building, and a corporate staff that does do research. Hal has been trying something on 103.9 for the longest. The Eagle flopped. Ted flopped. Talk flopped. What could possibly do any better? It's gonna have to be something that's worth listening to, otherwise because of the signal issue, it won't matter. If it went classic rock, I'd expect something like WTUE to go against 96.3.

FM Talk should have NEVER came to 103.9 anyway. I really wonder sometimes who listens to 103 - and for that matter, what shifts they actually listen to? I think this is very similar to what happens in Cincy with 94.1 - cursed frequency - nothing works... I honestly wish NABCO would sell off and CBS or another big name comes to COL. Very unlikely, but I can wish. Then maybe we'd get some good radio. I'm sure we'd see a NOW to go against WNCI. For that matter, I don't think any station that's flipped to CHR has gotten horrible ratings. If 103.9 did it, it wouldn't come close to WNCI, but I could see it pulling at least a 2.5 ???

Don't mean to reply to myself but I just read the rumor in the 103.9 thread.

Maybe Hal is going after the Brew with a Real 80's Rocker which could leave the door open to the possibility of tweaking 99.7 once again.

The Brew surprises me in the ratings sometimes. I think they are the classic rock outlet, considering 96.3 is not all classic rock. 99.7's been tweaked so much lately and has gone downhill ever since Stern left. I would've kept 99.7 as Active Rock. If 1039 does go classic rock, 997's gonna have to crossover even more to active rock. Right now, the active rock outlet is Radio 106.7 (and it's more alternative for that matter)

I was thinking... if the original poster DOES work inside the building and he said he hears a type of Classic Rock coming, more than likely it's gonna be Classic Rock. Plus... isn't 1039 still under contract with the Steelers? If that's the case, why would they put a format on that doesn't fit with running the games? If they do CHR, they'll have to stop the hit music to air the Steelers game. That's not something you need if you're gonna go up against WNCI. I'm willing to bet it's some type of Brew competitor, unfortunately. I bet the morning show on 1039 sticks around too.

Classic Hits - that sounds like 953 in Dayton, also a crappy signal, also failing in Dayton.

1039 - Classic Hits - Bubba The Love Sponge? I can't see it working long.
