103.9 Proud FM Toronto

nd2023

I just checked out that station tonight, and WOW, it sounds amazing! Almost a clone of Energy 92.7.
This raises up one important issue. Why must dance be stereotyped as "gay" music? I am straight and I love dance music, and even the gay capital of the US - San Francisco - had about 50% straight Energy 92.7 listeners. For most adults, we are mature enough to not make fun of "gay" music and people who like it, but to kids in grade school, "gay" is something to make fun of. Even as a college student, I would not really want to blast 103.9 Proud FM when my friends are in the car, lest they think I'm gay because I listen to that station. Dance music appeals to people of all sexual orientations. And not all gay people like dance music. People will like a radio station because of the music it plays, not because it conforms to their sexual orientation.
At least Energy 92.7 did not alienate its straight listeners by implying that only gay people listen to Energy 92.7. I am proud to like dance music!

Im secure enough in my manhood, it doesnt bother me to listen to a gay radio station if I like the music, its not like its Wham and boy george 24/7....... Who cares if people think your gay, let them think what they want, me and my g/f and close friends and family know im just a dorky straight guy...... hehehehehe

I get a different tone in Monmouth County. When I blast dance music, I get them "turn off that BENNY music" shouts.

That would just make me turn it up louder, if they dont like it, they can stay away from my house and out of my car.

I just looked at it...it's only 50 watts. So I guess they can afford to just target the neighborhood of their transmitter site. I was under the impression that they covered the full market or were a large rimshot.

Dang, I knew they were low power, but I thought they were more like 500 watts. 50 watts has about a 6 mile radius coverage area.

I could care less about the "gay" and "guido" comments on me. I love the music....PERIOD.

However, backhandedly I can't help to think that this sort of "stereotype" is what is killing dance music in the mindset of corporate thinking that THIS is the only audience that the music can attract.

Proud FM is specifically aimed at Toronto's LGBT community, and its transmitter is in the heart of Toronto's largest gay concentration. The station is owned by Evanov, which also owns Z-103.5.
It's easy to tell that this station by and large targets gays - it's no coincidence the station's name is Proud 103.9. Even the jocks on the homepage make it obvious who the target demo is.
In Toronto though everyone listens to Dance music. They have Dance shows on the Top 40 stations, the Hot AC stations, the Modern Rock stations, even the foreign-language stations.

ive been listening to this station online a lot now...thx to this board

Say thanks to chrles,,, he is the best contributer on the whole net about dance and chr radio stations.... Without him I wouldnt have discovered so many great stations. Ive know chrles online for about 7 yrs and followed him from a few different boards and a few screen name changes for myself.

Thanks man, you've definitely done your fair share of contributing as well.
I first started posting in 1997 on a regional board primarily focused on the Northeast. From there it turned to the Coast To Coast radio board. Guys like Tanim, and I think the late Doug Fleming (R.I.P.), were also members of the board.
In the early part of this decade I was also posting a lot on Tampa's Wild 98.7 (now Wild 94.1) board. I started posting lists of some of my favorite Dance songs, which quickly grew into the monthly House and Trance list. It was a lot of fun as there was a small but tight community of people, like DJ Dalimah, and 93.3 FLZ's Dance guru Brian Fink, that would post on the Wild boards. Even Wild's PD, Orlando, would post on occasion, as would many of Tampa Bay's club DJs (like DJ Santana and Aries).
