I heard about that too. Remember when they used to do really deep "alternative" weekends? The reverse weekends or whatever. I really liked those. Now they're just going to sound like KDKB on a really bad day. What do you do on the weekends when you want to hear good alternative music? You don't turn on the FM dial in Phoenix.

Classic Alternative: 1st Waver - Sirius 22

90's to Current Alternative: Alternative Nation - Sirius 21

--

It find it depressing that I listed satellite channels. With so many FM signals, you'd think a few would be worth listening to all the time.

I could understand hair band weekend on KDKB or even KUPD, but the Edge? Radio programming decisions never cease to amaze me.

> Its why satellite radio makes sense, nearly 10,000,000 people know why choices are just eons better than terrestrial radio offers. The state of the union for terrestrail radio should let everyone know the quality and choices are in the toilet for the most part. Ask terrestrial radio listeners to sample Sirius or XM and they say "WOW"!!

What a horrid idea.

There couldn't be an easier way to just chuck all the cred you've built up over the years straight out the window. Better hope all the P1s were in LA this weekend. White Lion "Let the Children Cry" on a modern rock/alternative? Poison next to The Pixies? The only thing worse may have been teen bands like NKOTB or Britney, but at least then there would have been an element of humor.

Yes, this is the one area of rock that is largely untouched by Sandusky with the exception of the 'House of hair' show on KDKB. Still, just because McDonald's doesn't sell Pig's Head Soup doesn't mean Arby's should do so.

I remember in the 80s how different the alternative fans were from the hair bad rock fans. Two totally different lifegroups. It wasn't until the grunge movement in the early 90s when rock and alt merged together.

So I agree with everyone here. Alternative stations should never play 80s hairbands. The ALT audience that remembers the 80s will have very negative memories of hairbands and their fans.

I totally agree, I could not believe what I was hearing over the weekend. They should've did a classic alternative weekend (late 70's to early 90's) and that would've been but not this hairband music, how horrible

The difference between 80's hair band and alternative listeners

You're absolutely right JayF. Polar opposites. Both somewhat fringe groups, but the fringe is about is about the only common ground they shared.

As a matter of fact, they probably would have "rumbled" had the alternative (that wasn't the term back then, but was there one?) group not been such pacifists. How can you be tough listening to music from The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, New Order etc? Alternative, and some masculinity at least, merged in the late 80's and early 90's with Janes Addiction, Rollins Band, The Cult etc.

I think The Edge certainly tested listener loyalty by virtually alienating their entire audience for the weekend.

That's if you buy the stereotype that the only people who listen to the Edge wear Doc Martens, Sex Pistols t-shirts, and heavy black eyeliner.

There's also people like my wife who listen to alternative stations now, but listened to White Lion back in the day. If you look in her CD binders you'll find Johnny Cash next to The Clash, The Smiths, The Cure... and Poison and Whitesnake.

Yeah, it's risky. But not every alternative P1 has been alternative all their lives. If you position it as a chance to laugh at all the crap you listened to in high school (and don't do it every weekend) it might actually be fun for some people.<P ID="signature">______________

I'm with you on this one. I listen to The Edge about 75% of the time, but I was also a fan of the hair bands in the 80's. So it was one of those goofs that was fun for a weekend. Let's not lump fans of The Edge into one category. With Chuck and Vince in their mid 30's they are hitting that demographic that may have dabbled in the hair bands back in the day.

More importantly let's give it up to The Edge for taking a risk, even if it was a bad one. We complain about stations playing it safe with the same songs from their format. We want them to get outside the box and The Edge got way the heck out of the box on this one. Whether it was a good idea or not, they did do something that very few stations would even try by playing outside their format.

Oh and let's not forget The Edge regularly plays Johnny Cash, not exactly you're every day alt-rock act.

Sort of a "Kodachrome" moment?
