103.9 WMNI FM move approved by FCC

I could see them keep the news format and move it to the AM side, and launch something new on the FM now that they will have a good signal over the entire city

WMNI-AM is already News, so that would be an easy move. Maybe they will launch a play everything sta... oh wait. Maybe they could do a classic ro... hmm, nope. I've got it! Adult Standards!

The WNCI-FM tower move will probably happen within the next year if not sooner. They work fast over there.

Personally, I'm expecting them to keep the all news format on the new stick at least temporarily. Columbus dose not have a news-talk format of
FM and they may want to see how it dose on the new stick. This tower move will make WMNI-FM a much more competitive signal and they will probably shake up the new format a bit when they move WNCI-FM to the new tower site. This will certainly then get WTVN's attention and they will
want to put WTVN on both FM and AM.

BTY,

Here is the new Radio-Locator coverage map for the new WNCI-FM tower site. These maps are for "entertainment purposes only" as they say.

WMNI-FM, of course... Sorry, for catching my mistake. WNCI is moving nowhere.

I'm surprised this was granted given the overlap west of Columbus with WXEG.

I ran this old WMNI-FM application across a FCC radio consultant acquaintance of mine over two years ago and asked him that same question.

I asked him this... WMNI-FM is ex WTDA 103.9:

I'm curious if WTDA 103.9 is providing enough protection to WXEG 103.9 in this application:

To my surprise, he told me this:

Artie,
"Actually I think he is overprotecting WXEG as it is 73.215."

Whatever 73.215 is!!

So, after this reading this two years ago, I'm now not surprised it was granted based on it's adequate protection to WXEG-FM. He is the expert, I was just curious and that is why I asked.

FCC hearing and ruling on the case brought by Franklin (Saga) against the move of 103.9 to the new site.

http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=36534

Per Saga, "the proposed change of WMNI-FM’s community of license is an attempt to 'game' the Commission’s processing policies, because NABC is only interested in locating its transmitter closer to the central part of the Columbus Urbanized Area, rather than serving the community of Worthington."

Those typical objections are such hypocritical shams, given that Saga does exactly the same kind of thing when they can.  Or are we supposed to believe that Saga's Rewind stations are truly ever-so-dedicated to serving Pickerington and Richwood?  :D

I'd imagine WMNI-FM will stick with news for now, but it would have been nice to first see if a music format was more viable with a finally-upgraded signal.  Maybe they were trying to beat WTVN to the FM punch, although it's not really the same format (thank goodness).

BTW, I've lost track...exactly where is this new stick?

ETA:  Just now saw gabigley's new post on a two-year-old thread about how the 103.9 move prevents 104.3 from moving, so Saga's objection seems a little more justified now -- though, make no mistake, Saga games the system like everyone else.  Personally, I would have rather seen Rewind get better coverage throughout the metro than 103.9.  Still trying to recall where the new 103.9 stick will be...

The location is on a Cell tower that already exists near the corner of Fischer Rd and Phillipi Rd. You can see it from the parking lot of the new Casino

In this case, wouldn't be surprised to see WMNI-FM up and running from this new tower
site by late Spring at the latest. This is because of a existing tower site they will be relocating
to.

Can we see a photo of their new tower site? Please post a link here.

Is this it?  Looking East from Phillipi, a little South of Fisher:

Exactly the SAME exact thing they tried to do with 104.3 FM by moving it's City of license and locating it's tower off 62/3 near Grove City... unfortunately WCVO's issues with tower site locations "NIMBY" foiled that when The River had to move closer to Columbus (off N. Hamilton Rd).

I think 104.3 in Cincinatti, a 104.3 translator in Newark, 104.5 in Wooster and 104.1 in Portsmouth might play a role with WNNP 104.3 not getting an upgrade to a class B1.

I'm not exactly sure why the 104.3 translator in Newark even exists. It clearly cuts into WNNP's coverage area, when they can stay on the air that is.

The Newark station is a LPFM... We know the FCC likes those stations.. Also I am pretty sure it's out of the protected contour of 104.3.
