103Q in Bumswick

What's the story on this station? Decent signal to Jax (Northbank and above). They claim to be South Georgia's Hit station but seem more CHR/Rock. Not much rap or urban heard here, why?
Doesn't seem very CHR focused. I know this is Bumswick but still I kind of expected a better product.

How would you improve 103Q in attracting the desired target demos while improving overall billing?

103Q is the former Sunny 103.3, they flipped back in the fall sometime (September maybe?) Sunny was once a market leader AC (though they lacked musical focus too) before former Jacksonville PD Mark Bell headed to Magic 105.9 and flipped them around and put Magic on top within a year of arrival (by 2008 I believe they were #1 or very close). After 2 years of sagging more and more behind Magic (a dayparted station, very Hot AC during the day and CHR at night) Sunny 103 hired former KISS 105.3 PD/Morning man Kevin Quinn and flipped to "CHR". I agree, it's a very weak station-- still running Tesh at night doesn't fit the format at all.

Mark, to answer your question-- I'd make 103Q a full-on CHR with a more relevant night show. Either tracked or perhaps something like Party Playhouse or Nudge at Night.

When did Kevin Quinn leave WYKS and head to Brunswick? Quinn was with Kiss for years. Do you know anything about the wherabouts of former Kiss PD Jeri Banta? Also, I agree Tesh does not belong on a CHR. At best, Tesh works fine on a soft AC or mainstream AC.

Talk to Jeri often. He's in sales at WOGX Fox 51 in Ocala/Gainesville. I agree, this is a weak sounding "CHR"? Running Tesh at night? What CHR runs Tesh at night?

Yup, Jeri is doing sales at FOX-51.

Kevin Quinn left WYKS last January.

The PD post has yet to be filled, with former WKZY Afternooner Alan "Pacman" Levy recently being named OM after being with WYKS for the past 18 or so months doing sales and P/T air work.

The only thing I can think is that Q103 is finishing out their contract with Tesh. Rather than waiting til the end to flip, they changed the music around and are going to continue to run Tesh until the end. They flipped (as I recall in early fall) so perhaps they have another 3-6 months left on the contract?

The Georgia board is over there, complete with a 103Q thread ----->

Thank you for pointing out the Georgia Board which I will promptly review. The North Florida cross-over is WYKS Gainesville and its former program director who now programs the Georgia station. Sometimes, depending on the subject, there are many crossovers between different regional Boards. Thanks again...

It's on this board because it booms into Jax loud and clear, especially north of downtown. I hear it's the most favorite station at Jax International Airport. Seriously, why not call it "Q103", what's up with "103 Q"? They really lean rock, hardly any dance CHR flavor here. Who owns this station, any possibility for an upgrade or too close to 103.3 The Vibe in Daytona?

WQGA-FM 103.3 Waycross, Georgia (Brunswick) is a class "C0" and is owned by Qantum Broadcasting. WQGA cannot move any closer to Jacksonville due to second adjacent protection spacing requirements towards WXXJ-FM 102.9 Jacksonville. The same holds true for WYNR-FM 102.5 "C1" Waycross (Brunswick), also owned by Qantum.

I've often wondered how the Dallas-Fort Worth stations get away with this. The "main" DFW FMs are full Class C's with their transmitters located between the 2 cities. In the late 1990s, the "land grab" began. Stations were bought, moved, upgraded, downgraded, and deleted. Now, there is a full Class C FM on practically every second adjacent channel. These transmitters are located north of the Metroplex. But since these are full C's on 1500-2000 foot sticks, their primary contours extend all the way to the transmitter sites of the "main" DFW stations. How/why did the FCC allow this to happen?

103Q does indeed do quite well in Nassau County and into Oceanway and the Northside.

But I have to ask-- I'm assuming the remark about 103Q being the favorite station at JIA is a joke?

:)

Of course it was a joke. My point was the signal, as you agreed, very strong on the Northside and near the airport. It's an ok station but it's not a "true" CHR. But good luck though.

Should be interesting to see, Q has the signal MAGIC 105.9 wishes it had. However, MAGIC is right in Brunswick. All around, MAGIC is a far better sounding station so I'm going to give the win to them for now.

Does this alleged "CHR" station play any music by Usher, David Guetta, Kid Cudi, etc...or do we get to just keep hearing tired Maroon 5 songs?

I've heard Usher and Lady Gaga. Nothing else yet, however.

and since they run TESH at night, I can't listen to monitor for very long once I get home from work.

Don't expect this station to take off... Mr. Quinn's programming skills leave something to be desired.

I agree Tesh does not belong on a CHR radio station; However, this may be out of Quinn's hands as there may be contractual obligations to continue airing Tesh until the affiliation agreement expires.

By way of example, when the former WFUZ 93.7 Ocala flipped from block programming (adult contemporary days / country at night) to full-time adult contemporary in 1985, the station was still under contract to air the Saturday night program "The Grand 'Ole Tailor Made Opry" which was a holdover from the previous Nighttime Country programming. Once the affiliation agreement expired, the "Opry" was cancelled from the WFUZ programming line-up.
