The HD signal is really going to mess with all those other translators on 104.1.
I’ve had 104.9 KZMP’s HD lock less than a mile from the 104.9 translator broadcasting from Cedar Hill. I actually had 90.1 KUCO’s HD lock over KERA a couple months ago, while I was on Spur 408 and could see the Cedar Hill tower farm! I don’t think KERA was at reduced power.
For KTCG, although I couldn’t hear the analog signal, the HD signal was locking in the car off an on, just west of Aledo on I-30 early this morning.

I find this really interesting. It really underscores an unintended benefit of HD radio for signals that encounter a lot of interference.
I wonder if people who have HD radios will get KTCG for a longer period of time while driving south toward the center of the metro from Denton than those who have analog-only.

I think if 104.5 KKDA-FM would light up HD, KTCG’s HD wouldn’t get out as far as it currently does. HD Radio operates on adjacent channels, since the actual channel is taken by the regular FM. 103.9 has IBOC hash from 103.7 KVIL, but 104.3 is free and there’s not a lot on that channel. I think this is because any translators in the Metroplex would be destroyed by KKDA-FM if they ever decide to turn on HD. If K104 did this, I think it would slightly help the other 104.1 translators that don’t broadcast in HD.
the only way 104.5 goes HD is if it got bought out by Radio One or Cumulus, but it won't happen any time soon

It seems that that’s the case! K104 does even have RDS right now. It’s been off for about a month.
No; you've got KWOW, KFYN, KBVP, and KKDA in the way.
Basically how it works is on 104.1 the IBOC has would be on the upper half of 103.9 and lower half of 104.3. So 103.9 is full of IBOC hash. If 104.5 went HD then 104.3 (and basically 104.7) would be full of hash. But because it basically uses half of that frequency you should be able to hear both stations HD. It’s how you can get 94.5 HD even though 94.1 and 94.9 are also in HD.
I'm not worrying about KKDA since lots of 2nd adjacent channel in the Dallas area (KAWA, KNOR, KZMJ, KTCK, KBOC, KFZO, KWRD, KYDA, KVDT, KRNB, KZZA, and KDXX) since they're at least Class C1 and able to rimshot into the Dallas Metroplex. I wonder if KWOW, KFYN and KBVP able to move to a different frequency or reduce power?
Now if the translators went HD that would be interesting

Normally that would involve the station wanting the upgrade to pay the other stations to move. There’s too much work to be done and I’m guessing the owner of KTCG doesn’t have deep pockets.
I could see a few of the rimshots you mentioned upgrading, before KTCG would upgrade to a C1, C0 or full C.
KWOW has already been moved at least once. I remember it being at 103.3, and it was moved to 104.1 so KEMM in Commerce could move to Allen and become a Dallas rimshot.
The other two, I believe, are relatively new licenses and were already shoehorned in.
I'm sure if there's any way possible to move any of those, an engineer will be able to find it so long as there's enough money involved. The FM dial in DFW, however, is already incredibly crowded. I can’t imagine there’s much more magic to be worked moving stations.
There’s also co-channel KKUS in Tyler.
KTCG cannot upgrade beyond its current C3. The station remains short-spaced as--is. The HAAT is 192M which would allow for 6.7kw ERP. The new owners decided to continue use of a non-directional antenna at a slightly lower power rating to protect a station in Oklahoma. At the current 6.2kw there's not much coverage lost..cheaper than buying a more expensive directional antenna.

It would bless my life to speak with you as I was told that they are moving me to 104.1 Translator and no longer will I be on a 104.9 FM because the signal is virtually useless.
