104.1 Going 100% Spanish

I thought maybe this was an April fools joke but we're in the middle of July.

So what type of spanish station? All Reggaeton, Tropical or Latin AC?

X

Phooey. I'd rather them move The River to 104.1 and take 105.9 Spanish. If this does take place my connections tell me you can say Adios to La Gigante 840 AM WRYM. Most likely WRYM will flip to mostly English Programming targetting the Newington-New Britain Area. WRYM is owened by 840 Broadcasting, Inc. part of which is owned by Luccio Ruzzier former owner of WRDM-LPTV and WRDM Radio.

If ANY FM station goes spanish in Hartford.. the Am stations will be absolute toast, thats just commonsense :)

On other boards I've posted to or lurked in, people who make their first post an out-of-left-field blockbuster like this are pretty much dismissed outright as trolls or nutjobs. Nice to see at least a discussion of this possibility here, as unlikely as it sounds.

I'm wondering, as a listener who's tried to absorb as much knowledge of radio's economics as possible through boards like this, whether there might not be enough advertising money to support two urban formats in Hartford, regardless of ratings. Do advertisers see Power 104.1 and Hot 93.7 as strong enough in the suburbs to warrant paying rates commensurate with their audiences, or do both stations still have to battle the "poor, minority" perception?

I wonder is WRCQ will be simulcasting on 104.1!! (Or if its them @ all)

Veyr interesting........That station has been thru SO MANY CHANGES!!

910, which was WRCQ-AM is not co-owned with 104.1 so fat chance of that happening. 100.5 isn't co owned either, ... again, fat chance.

[EDIT]

[EDIT=inflamatory]

I have to disagree with Walker about any AM Spanish Station being toast if 104.1 (or any other FM station in Hartford for that matter) goes Spanish. An FM can play the music, but one of the Spanish AMers could flip to Spanish News/Talk. Furthermore the FM Station can go Tropical or Regaeeton (or a mix of the two) and one of the AMers can flip to the Romantica or Classica Formats. Romantica is Spanish language Adult Contemporary (ala AMOR 93.1 in NYC or the short-lived Romance 910 in Hartford). Classica is Spanish oldies (ala the now defunct WBZS/WBPS [92.7/94.3] in DC. They flipped from Tropical to Classica after Infinity launched a Tropical Format on a DC stick with a much better signal that 92.7/94.3).

Walker is right. Except in Miami and Los Angeles and maybe New York once there is a Spanish signal on FM the AM operators are seriously hurt. Sure one can go to NT and one can go to ESPN Latina but most of the music listeners will listen to the FM..Denver is another example--music on FM and the AMs being sold to public radio groups of just hanging on.

Nope! That frequency was already an AC station in the past. 104.1 was already known as "Star 104.1" (WYSR-FM) after the WIOF-FM "Magic 104" days ended and before the WMRQ-FM "Radio 104" days started. This would be the early to mid-1990s (it became "Radio 104" on November 1, 1994). Besides, WRCH-FM "Lite 100.5" is too dominant. Also remember that WZMX-FM 93.7 was already "The New Mix 93.7" in the early 1990s. That eventually failed and started their 70s format, their "Point" format and the Dancin' Oldies format, which became todays "Hot 93.7" in March of 2001.

I mean a format thats current Hot AC, Lite 100.5 WRCH is a AC format. So you wouldn't hear "Where'd You Go by Fort Minor" on a AC station as its more for Hot AC and CHR. Clear Channel can make 104.1 as one of their Mix stations or call it 104.1 The Drive.

Umm... what would that move accomplish? 104.1 and 105.9 have virtually the same coverage areas.

But seeing 104.1 go to a Spanish-language format wouldn't surprise me. The demand is there, much like the demand for rhythmic stations back before the launch of Hot 93.7.

They should be flipping around mid september to a tropical format

Do you have a source? But here is one, does Clear Channel maybe want to bring in Whoppi's Morning Show and have it on 104.1 maybe making it a Rhythmic/AC just like what happened in Philly. If nothing good can happen with 104.1 Clear Channel might as well just sell the station.

POWER 104 has been without a morning show since Star & Buc Wild got axed in May. Clear Channel via Premire starts distributing the Whoppi Goldberg Show on August 14. CC should have flipped POWER 104 to Urban AC yesterday. The only down side to 104 going to Urban AC would mean Freedom Commumications would most likely add the rest of Radio One's Talk Programming to 1230 AM WKND, which is already airing Al Sharpton's show weekday afternoons.
