104.1 History

I believe it was originally WJBM-FM licensed to Jerseyville, IL. In the late-80's, it became WKKX "Kix 104." I believe it was Zimmer who launched Kix 104, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Anyway, Zimmer bought WKBQ "Q-106.5" in '94, and they swapped the two formats with WKKX going to 106.5 and top-40 WKBQ becoming "Q-104." That lasted until '97, when Zimmer sold WKKX and WKBQ to Emmis. Emmis flipped WKBQ to WALC "[email protected]," which did well until Jacor signed on KSLZ. As "Z-107.7" completely decimated Alice, it became rock WXTM "eXtreme Radio 104.1" in '98 after announcing "Alice doesn't live here anymore." eXtreme Radio did well for a few books before tailing off. After Emmis got Sinclair's stations in 2000, including 105.7 The Point, it didn't need WXTM. So, it launched 80's WMLL "The Mall." The Mall lasted until January 2004, when it became "[email protected]."

I worked at KIX 104 before oit swapped frenquency's. It was after Emmis bought it that Extreme was launched.

Jim Shannon

Launched in 1985 by Shelly Davis' Gateway Radio Partners - when it first went on the air, WKKX was not a very good rimshot - it could be heard well in most of the Metro East, as well as North County and St Charles County, but the signal was virtually non-existant to the south. A few years later, they moved onto a tower on Douglas Rd. in Florissant, which afforded them a somewhat better signal, but it still had a good amount of problems in the city proper as a Class C2 from that site, which it remained until a couple of years ago. Zimmer Broadcasting purchased the station out of bankruptcy in 1991, and sold it to Emmis in 1997 - by then it had flipped frequencies with 106.5 to become WKBQ. The format was subsequently changed to Modern AC As "[email protected]," and Emmis GM John Beck at that time was quoted as saying "Top 40 Radio will will never work in St. Louis," which of course was proven wrong less then a year later when Jacor launched KSLZ, which is still on the air nearly 14 years later...

The progression of call letters/formats on 104.1 - WJBM - Full Service/Country (1978 - 1985), WKKX (Kix 104 - Country 1985-1994), WKBQ (1994-1997 - swapped formats/call letters with 106.5 - Q104 CHR), WALC (Modern AC - [email protected] 1997-1998), WXTM (Active Rock "Extreme Radio" 1998-2000), WMLL (80s "The Mall" 2000-2004), WRDA (Standards [email protected] - 2004-2005), and finally WHHL (Urban "Hot 104" 2005-Present). In 2008, the station's city of license was changed from Jerseyville to Hazelwood, which allowed the station to relocate to a tower on DeBalleviere Ave. in the city, which was vacated by 101.1 when it upgraded to 100,000 watts. This, for the first time gave the 104.1 frequency a full market coverage signal, and subsequently, it has became the top Urban station in St. Louis.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything to trade. I just got into the business and don't have any taping equipment or anything like that. Sorry! :-\

In its KIX104 days, it was an oustanding radio station. I would not listen to country in those days, but I would listen to KIX because they sounded so very good. Chase and Sanborn in the afternoon was a favorite.

Does anybody have an aircheck of Alice or Extreme Radio?

I have an aircheck of Alice @ 104.1 from 3/27/97. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in a trade.

I have tried contacting you 3 times in the last month about this aircheck. I don't know why you are not checking your email often. Just a heads up to anyone who really wants this aircheck.

Don't forget that after The Mall was deemed to be dumped it was 104.1 The Christmas station playing all Christmas until new years....then, because they didn't know what to do, the launched 104.1 The Wheel of music...spinning several different types of music until it landed on Red like 3 months later

I always joked that Emmis didn't realize it but....they were actually starting the first variety hits station that would have been huge considering the arch's success!

Airchecks of both exist in old California Aircheck Market Profiles of St. Louis....WXTM from 2000 (#S-423), WALC from 1998 (#S-377) and 1997 (#S-352)...

Sorry! My inbox doesn't let me know when I get new messages. Also, I have nothing to trade at the moment. I'm trying to find software to record stuff and Audacity is giving me problems.
