104.1 WWBZ is WBZ-FM, "The Buzz"

Okay, I'm letting my imagination run wild.

Some thoughts:
1. Switch 104.1 to an FM Talker with Jay Severin in the afternoon and Paul Sullivan middays. Call it "The Buzz" WBZ-FM (officially WWBZ).

2. Move the WBCN call letters to 100.7 Those call would be great for a Classic Rock station.

3. Move some of the BZ-AM talk personalities over to "The Buzz". More and more emphasis on News on the AM. Less talk emphasis on the AM. Run all news till 9:00 pm then Larry King for an hour.

Hot Talk on 104.1...also bring aboard Tom "Spousal Abuse In The Back
Bay" Leykis, talking about the issues YOU...REALLY...CARE...ABOUT!
Paul Sullivan will definitely appeal to the folks who like Stern
and hard rock. I'm sure his show will have the same kind of
bumpers Severin uses :)

The Buzz is a perfect name, doesn't Jay have a buzz-flattop?

10/18/05 All Access Headline "Infinity Talkers FREE FM"

FROM ALL ACCESS:

"Infinity "Free FM" Rumors Fly..." Go to allaccess.com and it's the first story.

It appears Infinity is launching a nationwide network of FM Talk. Safe bet that this is where Severin is headed (NOT back to Greater Media's TKK)...SO...The 64,000 dollar question is, WHO BITES THE DUST? WZLX? WBCN?

ZLX just hired an all new morning show. Brought them in around the time the uppper upper management would have known this was coming. But stranger things have happened.

The theory of turning WBZ AM into a 24/7 news station, then moving their talk show hosts over to an FM talker "feels" right to me. BUT WHERE ON THE DIAL?

And just as a bonus question, could this be where Peter Blute is headed? I don't see him as national talent, but a LOCAL slot would be a fit, yes?

Is there an OPEN frequency? Maybe no-one bites the dust?

Just thinking out loud...

One question? If you're keeping the WBCN call letters...why do they need to move at all...why not just debut the FM-Talk station on 100.7 and let 104.1 WBCN continue its metamorphisis (it's got more heritage anyways)...though I do love the idea of WWBZ-FM (My only hope is that if this succeeds, Greater Media bites the bullet and pulls the plug on TKK, cause it's a huge waste in a market to have 2 stations doing FM talk)...

I see Infinity moving all talk to the WBCN frequency but I doubt they will call it "The Buzz"; that is too rock like for the type of talk WBZ has done since the beginning in the early sixties with Jerry Williams and others.
I imagine it will be something conservative like "Boston Talks 104.1 WBZ-FM.
And I think they will be using "WBZ" in some form for the FM talker since it is so well branded with 'BZ.

Funny, when this possibility was mentioned here about a month ago the naysayers were jumping all over the posters. Time will prove them all wet I believe.

Personally, I'd blow up WZLX. I'd move all the jocks, most of which worked at WBCN way back in the day anyway, over to 104.1 and relaunch WBCN as a classic leaning mainstream rock station much like WHJY in Providence. WBCN has much more heritage built up than WZLX does.

I doubt it. Right now it looks like this initiative is a way for Westwood One to clear their talk programming. Infinity could move Sully & Laveille over from WBZ for nights, but I wouldn't be too surprised if most of the programming comes in off the bird. Could Imus eventually start doing mornings at the possible new Infinity talker since his contract with WTKK runs out soon? His show is distributed by WW1/Infinity....

Good ideas. But why in the world would WBZ move its talk hosts to an FM? If they're looking to expand their news to 24/7, they can simply fire the hosts. FM for talk brings in a younger audience, that's one of the benefits. Why ruin it with hosts who can only attract old listeners?

One other note...wherever Infinity's Free-FM goes, can we please hope it will then kill WTKK...

96.9 is one of the stronger frequencies in the market, and it would be a shame for 2 full power FMs to be devoted talk rather than music...I don't care what Greater media puts on it (we all have our preferences), but some music would be nice...

No open FM frequencies are available for any new signals in the greater Boston area.

Re: 10/18/05 All Access Headline "Infinity Talkers FREE FM"

It's my guess that WZLX-100.7 and WBCN-104.1 will be consolidated as a single station with a hybrid classic/modern rock format on 104.1 with the WBCN call letters.

I also think Karlson and McKenzie will move to WBCN as it's new morning team (after all, Howard Stern is leaving) with perhaps one or two other WZLX personalities also moving to join most of the current 'BCN jocks.

This would make 100.7 a talk station, with not just Jay Severin, but probably also Imus, Bill O'Reilly, and perhaps WBZ-1030's current nighttime hosts moving over (and don't be surprised if Steve LeValle's weeknight overnight show and Jordan Rich's weekend overnight show both get syndicated----this would make up for both of them losing the huge 'BZ signal, considering many of their fans are from outside the Boston area).

WBZ-1030 would then become 24/7 all-news.

Despite Entercom's "Jack"-type format "Mike" (WMKK-93.7) in the market, don't be surprised if Infinity blows-up WODS-103.3 and replaces oldies with "Jack"---or maybe talk should Infinity decide to keep both WBCN and WZLX as-is.

As for recent WODS high-profile hire Karen Blake, if WODS goes "Jack" or talk, she could be moved to WBMX-98.5 and become John Lander's co-host.

And if indeed Infinity launches an FM talk station, the call letters "WIFR" (for Infinity FRee) are available (according to Radio-Locator.com; no station was listed under those calls). After all, the San Francisco station that will go to this format will be known as KIFR. But Infinity may want to get those calls into New York City (maybe as a replacement for WXRK-92.3's current format once Stern leaves).

Careful with those subjects, man!

I almost hit my head on the ceiling when I read the subject topic.
Now I find you were only giving a suggestion...

Urgh!

Oh boy! It's a syndicated show all the way from Indiana!

My question is this: how many talk stations do we need to have before a few maverick local hosts get their own shows on shifts where someone might actually listen - Lovell Dyatt, Jay Diamond and yes, Jimmy Myers. A slate of syndicated shows is no breakthrough...

WBZ-FM?????????

How about they buy 106.7 and call it WBZ-FM and voicetrack it with Dave Maynard, make it commercial free while we are at it?

I can really see 100.7 being blown up and renamed WBZ-FM, as an FM talker.
WBZ-AM goes all-news 24/7. Maybe the FM simulcasts the Top Of The Hour AM newscasts, or at least has a "from the WBZ Newsroom" update each hour.

Either that, or they re-name 100.7 something completely different because they feel that WBZ's image is too upper demo non-radical, and they want to do something more cutting edge.

One way or another, this would blow 96.9 out of the water.

Either way, it seems to me that 100.7's days are numbered as a classic rock station, and that WBCN will absorb that element shortly in some kind of hybrid, as mentioned before, or maybe a flat-out classic rock remake. If the latter, this would be good news for WFNX, who would benifit from the sharper contrast between them and the current WBCN, and allow FNX to have a clear shot at access to certain things that BCN grabs now due to their (BCN's) superior coverage.
Edited by HHH on 10/19/05 03:58 PM.

Re: WBZ-FM - give WZLX to Greater Media and put KLB on 1510 to make BZFM a reality

How about they put the Country Klub on 1510 and put WBZ-FM on WKLB
by switching with Greater Media ?

That probably wouldn't work very well. 1510 has a poor signal outside the Route 128 rim, where I think a lot of the area Country audience is. And, why deprive Country fans of FM stereo? That would just make more of them tune to WOKQ Dover, NH or WCTK New Bedford/Providence. WKLB actually does fairly well, they should leave it alone.

As well, WKLB has a fair but not great signal downtown, where you would want this hypothetical talk station to be really strong.
