I'm hearing a clean carrier on 104.3. Is WAY about to come on the air? I'm wondering if they realize that having just a carrier on the air is in violation of 73.787 Station Identification.

What is a carrier KY?
The carrier is what "carries" the program to the radio. It usually has audio imposed on it in the form of music & voice. When a carrier has no audio, it's referrred to by a number of names...clean carrier, dead carrier, dead air, etc. In addition to carrying the sound, it also keeps the radio "quiet" between words, songs, etc. Sounds like the transmitter is back on...which may be a test or may be an indication that WAY FM is on the 'way'. In any case, they are required to identify themselves hourly and if they are not doing so, they are in voliation of FCC rules as noted in this thread. If that is truly the case, shame on them!

As long as you mentioned 104.3 i just saw the wlrs vehicle out but it still says 104.3 and 105.1 i wonder why?
What a stupid idea it was to simulcast that station on two frequencies. Not a very bright move radio one.

Has the sale actually been approved? If not, any non-compliance with regards to identification is Radio One's problem!

(Not that I think the FCC would fine a station for technical difficulties - the lack of a local studio might be a different matter).

The assignment of license was granted October 1. The station officially belongs to "WAY-FM MEDIA GROUP, INC." now. As I understand it, they will be leasing the space from Main Line that the station occupied. Although I don't know why. The space it was in over off of Spring Street is available and the STL dish is still there.

Like Bob said, the carrier is the signal generated by the transmitter for AM stations or exciter for FM stations. Audio is then imposed on the carrier and your receiver then decodes the audio from the carrier. A clean carrier and dead air are the same. The transmitter is functioning but there is no audio. However I have always considered a dead carrier synonymous with being off the air. Dead transmitter=dead carrier. And I can think of some carriers that need to be shot and put out of our misery!

All stations are required to identify themselves "as close to the top of the hour as format allows; within plus or minus 5 minutes thereof". Music intensive formats, there is no reason why a station cannot follow this rule. I knew a field engineer at the Power Springs Georgia FCC office. He told me once that a missing ID is a sure fire way to get a visit from an inspector. The reasoning is that if a station can't do something as simple as a legal ID, chances are other things have been neglected. And my clients wonder why I'm so anal about them running legal IDs. In the past, I have had clients that, for whatever reason, were having problems with their STL, both microwave and telco. If the problem is not easily remedied within about 15 minutes, I'll turn a transmitter off.

And that's your engineering lesson for today.

It could be because WLRS sucks.. sales and ratings sucks... nobody buys remotes.. the truck rarley gets taken out of the garage on 4th St.. why put a new decal on it when you know it's not gonna last!

No carrier from WAYI the past two days.

Found out today that the transmitter was turned on by mistake. The former chief engineer of the station was contacted, and turned it back off.
