104.3 questions, err, 3 questions about 104.3

(1) Is 104.3's TOH ID legal? I think they need to fix that.....It might be okay to list the frequency between calls & COL, but not between the "WAXY" and the "-FM." Note listening to 790, 104.3, or www.theticketmiami.com

(2) Will they move their transmitter closer to Miami prior to November, when the Heat season starts? One would think they would be scrambling....

(3) Is their having HD really necessary, for a spoken-word radio station? (Especially when 102.7 has them as HD2 now) After all, phone calls don't sound like HD....

For 104.3, possibilities similar to ESPN NY's FM outlet:

They may keep it in HD in order to add sub-channels such as ESPN Deportes (which already exists at 1210 AM WNMA owned by Multicultural Radio; so maybe no dice there) and/or ESPN News audio and/or ESPN Radio's national feed or some other programming.

Also, they could turn off the stereo pilot which may help the signal in fringe areas. Mono and HD aren't mutually exclusive; they're run together on the aforementioned WEPN-FM NY. When the Jets games air, the analog signal runs live (or close to it) while the HD signal runs approximately 8 seconds behind. This would make listening on an HD radio (particularly mobile units: portable/automobile) rather unpleasant if the HD signal doesn't lock in or if there's no ability to cancel the HD signal.

(1) I'm sure you're correct - provided there continues to be a WAXY on AM; it's a minor technicality, one I don't think the FCC would make too great a fuss over.

No idea about #2, and #3 was answered brilliantly by the previous poster.

Okay.....the 104.3 signal is indeed mono.

I suppose that whatever 790 will do, once the transmitter move has been done, could well be on one of the possible subchannels.

At the present time, the Heat games will have to stay on 790 only, because West Palm Beach has a Heat affiliate----and 104.3 is still a WPB station. I forgot to mention that.

When 104.3 moves, 102.7-2 will stop simulcasting them.
Putting Deportes on 790 makes sense to me, but they could also wind up on a digital sub-channel.

Here's a novel idea....how about NO HD?? :D

BTW they said today that the Heat games will be on both AM & FM....it's possible that there is no actual WPB area affiliate this year outside of "WAXY-104.3-FM".

As one who's not in the market but curious I have a question.

How is the signal in Miami & south dade at present? I know from visiting Boca and Lauderdale that WPB is about 65, 70 miles by car. As we know, current transmitter location near Wellington will make it hard to get the station on a Walkman.

Do we know where they are moving the transmitter? How will that affect the signal in Miami Dade & Broward? Matt

The transmitter / tower location is moving to an area near the Broward / Dade county line with a city of license change to Miramar. Once the move is completed, WAXY-FM will have an FM signal comparable to any other full market Miami-Dade / Fort Lauderdale signal.

It's a decent signal on the car radio (YMMV) until you get to Homestead or so. Not listenable on a $10 FM radio in Miami now, though. I work near the airport, and cannot get 104.3 there on my el cheapo, although the other Dade/Broward 100 kw stations make it.

Update: The HD for now hs been shut off for 104.3. That opens the possibility to hear 104.5 in either Freeport* or Nassau* (each city has a 104.5, and they are not always parallel). Unfortunately, a pirate on 104.5 seems much louder now.

*104.5 Freeport relays AM 810 (which I did not hear at all today----maybe 810 has shut off for good?), and 104.5 Nassau relays AM 1540. Both are ZNS outlets, and I believe are parallel in overnights.

Anyway, here's your chance to hear Bahamas on FM.
