104.3 silent in HD

Tuning around yeasterday I noticed a dead carrier on 104.3. Since I had just left the Mt. Potosi tansmitter site doing some work for my Lotus stations, I knew that the transmitter was OK when I left. We always check each other transmitters to see if we can save the other engineers a trip up the hill. Turns out that 104.3 is only silent in HD. My truck radio is an HD radio. The HD is turned on, but not being fed audio apparently. Listeners in conventional FM would hear normal signal. I have no idea how long it has been this way. The HD signal is the regular FM signal audio only it is in HD. If there is an HD 2 or HD 3 it would be something different, but the basic HD audio is the same as the Analog. I wonder how long this will be going on. Ed Stolz does his own engineering and hasn't made himself known to most of us in the engineering community around here.

Maybe Ed is starting a cool new trend in broadcasting where you no longer compromise your signal pumping out a weak digital version of the same crap pushed out on your analog signal to an audience that doesn’t exist. In Ed’s case, he needs everything he’s got to get that turd of his to sound like an FM station. Turn it off Ed!

I’m sure that you Bill only listen to HD because you have to support it technically. I personally don’t own a HD radio and don’t know a single person who does or is planning on getting one. One colossally dumb idea.

oops bumped the last message out . I was going to add, After spending $125,000 on the equipment and antenna for KOMP, Lotus has chosen not to put to high a priority on HD. I'll get the equipment up and running when I can but no rush. I rarely listen to the HD channels intentionally, but the Kenwood EZ500 in my truck will try to hear HD if it is there. It is difficult to make it listen analog when the HD is on even if silent. I listen to KXNT and KDWN on the AM dial and can hear the switching on and off HD a lot as I drive from the studios on west Flamingo to my home near East flamingo and boulder Highway. I own three HD radios, in the truck, a Receptor on my desk at work and a Sangean HDT 1 in my home stereo. I don't recall the last time I used the home unit for HD. AM HD in my NTBH opinion is a total loss. The algorithm is not well suited for talk radio. FM HD has some potential, but even with the proposed 6 DB power increase, still leaves much to be desired. I sincerely doubt anyone has made any money in this market from their HD2 or HD 3 channels. The NPR guys kid about having problems and that "Both of our HD listeners complained!"
Just my opinions, not those of my employer, the AMA, ARRL, SBE or the National Kennel club.

Bill
