104.3....Waiting......

Listening to the significantly power-weakened KAFE 104.3 at 5:14 AM.......

*I'm in Bellingham and I can actually hear something on 104.5.....that's how far the power has been toned down....still advertising KAFE as 104.3.....as the clock ticks.....

....and so far, all seems pretty damn happy.....The first communication between CHHR and KAFE went out over the air on KAFE 6:12-6:16 AM just COOL.....

Here's the links to the streams in case anyone wants to check it out at 7:30.

KAFE:

CHHR:

History is unfolding this morning because as far as I know this is the first ever international frequency swap between Canadian and American stations. You have to give First Broadcasting credit though. When I first heard about these plans a couple years ago I gave it a zero chance of happening (dealing with the bureaucracies of 2 nations, etc.), but First Broadcasting was determined and somehow they did it.

I have KAFE on!

Please be taping CHHR NOW!

Well, I have CHHR on. Absolutely no sign of KAFE on 104.3 at the moment.

Got it....TAPED.....You may hear a few seconds of silence as I'm digitally fumbling down to 104.1.....but surprisingly, I cut it PERFECTLY......

My initial observations up here in Maple Ridge are that both KAFE & CHHR have dynamite signals on their new frequencies. I'm able to listen to both of them in crystal clear stereo with no interference from each other. I would imagine as you get closer to Vancouver CHHR would obliderate KAFE, I'll check that out in the car later. Maple Ridge is about 25 miles east of Vancouver.

From south bellingham last night, both 104.1 CHHR and 104.3 KAFE were coming in great from my high gain antenna, but my little handheld couldn't pickup CHHR at all, and KAFE sticking close to 104.3. This morning after this switch, I left it on 104.3, which went pretty much to static for 1 minute or so, and then BOOM they powered up and 104.3 is almost as clear as 104.1!

Called in to KAFE this morning, but they didn't wanna talk about the 'complicated history' behind the switch. "it would confuse and bore people." Oh well, I think its fascinating that some little ho-dunk radio station in Oregon was able to kick out a HS station, make a bunch of agreements with other stations about contours and power, and get an international agreement between two stations, all so KMCQ can be full power in Seattle.

Oddly, KAFE doesn't mega-blast now (kinda the same signal strength as KEXP in Lynnwood) but they are running at lower power now (Smart move, let me see if I've got KMCQ?...Nope, it's either a SUPER weak signal or KMCQ just flipped to AAA or CHHR is kicking their asses....And it is. I could hear them VERY clearly on 104.3 to 104.5 MHz.

But once KAFE gets to normal power....well, then. That's the end of my terrestrial rock n' roll radio fun.....until..........sometime, I hear of something BETTER.....

CHHR just announced that they are currently running on reduced power. Things will supposedly get back to normal in about 24 hours, so I guess we'll have to wait until then to give accurate reception reports.

Whereabouts are you? I'll have to get in the truck today and see what I'm getting CHHR. Perhaps KAFE powered way down for a few minutes when the switch happened, which would explain the power up I heard this morning.. but perhaps are still at low power. I'll be heading to Seattle tomorrow, I'll have to switch between the two and see how they sound.

Having just turned on the "Shore 104" streaming, I remember how it's such a cool station.

It and CBC Radio 2 are the only places I've heard this great Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson song "Break up." It should be burning up the A/C or Hot A/C charts, in my opinion. It's relaxed and friendly.

Oh well, since I've only heard it on Canadian stations it must count as can-con somehow. :(

Well, goodbye to KAFE 104.3 and hello 104.1! Listened live to 104.3 this morning. Abrupt cut of power at 7:30 sharp. Saw that 104.1 and 104.3 were both silent for a few seconds (I don't get CHHR), then I heard the power starting on 104.1 live.

Also, 104.3 is a new open frequency (IF KMCQ DOSEN'T START IBOC!!!!) for DX here! I can't wait to get KMNT up here. Currently, 104.5 interference with a little bit of 104.1 interference.

I thought there was supposed to be this big party at the Peace Arch and the exchanging of styrofoam frequencies and this was all supposed to be seen on YouTube....

My hunch = shareholders voted down the styrafoam expense as "unnecessary".

Nope, they had a small ceremony at Peace Arch and KAFE took pictures while CHHR has some video of it.

Just wondering, does KAFE get a lot of interference from CHHR in Vancouver now?

I don't think it matters to the radio stations.....you can SEE the LOVEFEST.....

Personally, I still wish CHHR slipped some BC Bud in that basket (hope they did anyway)....would have REALLY livened up things......

Can you still hear KAFE 104.(1) in Vancouver or SHore 104.(3) block out the signal.

I know that I can still hear KISM 92.9, PRAISE 106.5, 100.3 THE Q in Vancouver when I was up there back in June.

Yesterday, on the 104.3 frequency, while an airplane went by (Airplane scatter), I heard some faint rapid fading in and out talk on 104.3. Unfortunaly, I could not get an ID before the plane left.. I bet this was KMNT, but I don't know, because 104.5 bleeds onto 104.3 a little bit, and 104.1 too.

I was in Abbotsford BC this weekend. 104.1 clear and 104.3 clear. In Kenmore WA, I get 104.1 okay and on 104.3 I get the country station poorly. 104.5 is clear in Kenmore when it is on the air.
