ahhh what the......I feel special today

Bro....I did read your post, and I just did again, and I see nothing on how we as a radio community can help out. What I do see, is you pointing out a specific station, and then talking about how YOU could have OBVIOUSLY done it better. Nice closer on it though......I do agree with that.
Sorry for bringing negativity to such an obvious positive thread. 0_o

I wish I had selective memory though, block out things I don't like, that would rock!!!

RMarino......

The way you stated your comment was that you had knowledge of what those stations were doing. You did not state that you were NOT listening and did not know what was being broadcast. If I said, "There are no clouds in the sky." You would assume I was outside, or have been outside to make that call. But, if I was inside all day and never went or looked outside, then it would not be a logical statement for me to make. In other words, since I've already WAY over-explained what I was trying to say, you should speak of what you KNOW. Otherwise, it's just rumor or specualtion. My response to you, was verifying that 2 stations that you heard NO info on, in fact did.

friends? ok...maybe that's pushing it.....I KNOW......we'll add each other on myspace!!! hahahaha

Tibbs,

Thanks bro!

Man, rock formats are taking hits all over, too many reasons to list. Thanks for noticing though, we'll see if we can continue to push up, i know, good luck right? Take care man.

But, but, but all those owners say they serve the community!

Five months ago an early Sunday morning F-4 tornado developed in the Henderson, KY/Evansville, IN/Newburgh, IN area. The twister was on the ground for twenty minute moving at sixty miles per hour. It heavily damaged a horse track, slammed into a trailer park and took out a few subdivisions. Twenty-four people died.

Two television stations provided continual coverage long before and long after the worst of the storm. Radio on the other hand was an occasional EAS, if it worked at all, and the rare announcement of a tornado warning. Beyond that was automation and recorded forecast calling for a chance of thunderstorms. The local radio stations who claim a weather image went into action after the storm ended. At first it was TV audio then a few stations brought in their morning shows Sunday morning, but beyond that was regular programming. On the Indiana board I vented frustration over radio's half ass coverage, I was in the minority. It seemed many on the board justified radio's actions or lack there of.

It makes me sick when I hear a station owner or manager boast about radio and its ability to "serve the community" and "that darn satellite radio won't warn you of an emergency". Sometime radio is able to do its job; the New Orleans radio community during Katrina was a prime example of how radio can convey emergency information. But more often, in today's environment of stockholders and debt load, radio drops the ball. My advice, as it was on the Indiana board, is to purchase a weather alert radio and a battery powered television. Because most television stations still understand part of the job is conveying emergency information, a concept radio used to understand when it was run by broadcasters.

To those radio stations who did their job, I salute you. To those who didn't do their job, shame on you.

Wow, 650 AM falls into the "some" coverage listing? We were wall to wall from about 12:30pm until 8:00pm, then reports about every 15 minutes (when needed) until 10:30pm. Three of us in studio, one on the phone monitoring other news sources, Richard Thomas, one in Gallatin on the phone, and Accu-Weather. And just like Sunday night, tons of people on the phone asking "is it safe to come out of the closet yet?"

The entire staff should take pride in knowing that they provided a great public service on Friday.

Somebody should reward members of the WSM's staff or any station's staff that went above and beyond with steak dinners and cold beer, for those who indulge, to show appreciation for their hard work.
______________

If they could only get pedicting down to a more exact science we could sponsor the coverage... that would get it broadcast.

I know...hence why I said "elsewhere in the thread".

I realized after I started the post that I'd replied to the wrong one, and that was the only way I knew to try to say I wasn't "calling you out", so to speak, aside from just ditching the post.

LMAO!!!

It actually happens from time to time. Years ago, I remember a station airing a billboard after the EBS tone, "This Storm watch update brought to you..." We had to call over there and remind them the FCC could have issues with their method of NTR. The station saw the errors of their ways and moved the billboard.
______________

Now that this discussion has settled down somewhat, I'll hop in. I have no idea what was going on at WGFX when the storms happened, or who made the decision about how they would handle their coverage. I'm really not sure how they should have handled the situation. I wouldn't go as far as to say that they failed miserably, at any rate.

But I firmly believe that if George had been in the studio instead of on the DL, it would have been handled differently. When the tornadoes hit Nashville in '98, and George was on 99.7, they scrapped everything for the storm coverage, and he encouraged people to call in to talk about the storms. Granted, George does seem to fancy himself an amateur meteorologist. But even if someone over his head at Citadel had wanted it to be handled differently, George would have gone wall-to-wall with storm coverage. He has enough clout to do that, I think.

I may be wrong. It might have been exactly the same. But judging from past history, it would have been different. Having said that, it's a difficult situation, and I do give the folks at WGFX credit for trying to keep everyone informed with frequent updates.
