104.5 to Clear Channel

Enlightening thread on the Oregon Board. 104.5 has an agreement to be purchased by Clear Channel. The plan is to move Sports Radio to FM and then use KJR-AM for the Premiere Talk Talent. Rush will be the kingpin of the new 950 AM along with Dr. Laura and the usual cast of characters. Portland Board and KMCQ staff say it will happen in eight months, once KAFE downgrades their signal. Saga has already been paid. What does all this mean?

Sports Radio gets a full FM market signal and bid on Mariners next time.
Clear Channel gets an AM Talker for Rush, Dr. Laura and the cast of Premiere talent. Entercom posters on the Portland Board say KIRO already plans FM simulcast on KNDD in order to combat the new Clear Channel combo of a sports talker on 104.5 FM and Talk Station on 950. You learn alot checking out the boards to the south. While all this is going on MOVIN just gets stronger in both markets. Things are a changin.

How do you know this? Insider source?

Would CC just yank Rush off KTTH, Laura off KLFE, contract or not to build this station? Would KJR AM have any local stuff (ha ha)?

please please let this not be true, KJR would never move to FM because they have been an AM station forever and a sports station since 1991 and they have been very succesful at it. There is no way that KJR will do this and upset all of their loyal listeners, many of them who have been listening to KJR for years, I myself have been listening to KJR since the mid 1990's when New York Vinnie was doing a show, when Mitch in the Morning was Mitch in the Midday and even when the Fabulous Sports Babe still had a show on KJR. Also, as for the Mariners, they are doing very well with KOMO even though the Mariners have been slumping as of recent years, also would KJR's signal be as good as it is now? KJR has it made right now, they have a perfect lineup of hosts, they're the flagship station for one of the best College basketball teams around in the Washington Huskies, they've been one of the most dominant sports stations in the country and there's no way that KJR would ever mess with a perfect formula like they do know. Bottom Line if KJR switches to 104.5 it would be a huge mistake.

Ok. Then Funky Monkey takes the channel and competes with KISW & KNDD in a bitter, three-way match, where all three parties each get a 1.7 rating. So pick your poison.

One very important reason 950 would not be on 104.5 is KJR FM is already on 95.7 and it would be pretty silly to have two KJR FM's

I mentioned awhile ago that the 104.5 thing was contingent on Clear Channel sale.

So if all this goes through as explained above ... what would YOU do with 770am? For that matter, what kind of numbers does 850am pull?

I'm kind of jaded these days ... but feels like we're at a point of diminishing returns. Owners trying to figure out something to "jam" on a frequency so it covers its costs. 1150am, 850am, some of the Salem stations, etc. are examples of this. On the other hand, sometimes competition seems to work .. the two station country battle is kind of interesting when other markets are dumping country (here both seem to do well enough to make a "go" of head-to-head competition).

But the jaded part of me is when the research companies show up and say "we've discovered a format hole". Just once I'd love to see the innovation be something unique ... but maybe that has already happened when JACK, MOVIN' were introduced (both seem to be new concepts that have done well INITIALLY, at least). Why did "Blink" (CBS) fail? It was also result of a lot of research but barely had a chance to get traction before plug was pulled.

If 950 becomes premiere talk station, it should at least have more of a shot than having this national talent spread all over the market with various contracts. Still untested in this market are formats such as "Greenstone" (which WAS based here, but soon to move) -- talk radio for women. Maybe that would be a better play for something like the 1150 station than what they are doing now??

770

770 'COULD' turn into a Spanish music station....

Thoughts?

Don't get too worked up folks. Mamma is just repeating speculation from another discussion board, (maybe). Trust me, being in the promotions department at Sandusky does not make one very connected. She's just trying to stir the pot.
