104.5 to First Broadcasting

It is my understanding that application from Clear Channel was filed simultaneously and that this deal contingent on approval of pre-sale to CC. have not done research to see if that is simply rumor or is fact.

Here's what Radio & Records had to say: Scroll all the way down to see the details.

This could possibly turn into an 8.1 million deal if they can get to Cougar Mtn. First Broadcasting's Forks FM will need to change frequencies, and KAFE will need to move to 104.1 Mhz. But of course First Broadcasting has had an agreement from SAGA from the very beginning on that one.

Now the KMCQ owner can retire in style!

O.K. What about the 104.3 frequency in Centralia or the 104.7 frequency in Aberdeen? What are they going to do about it?

Those stations, KMNT, Centralia and KDUX, Aberdeen, are just fine where they are. Their 54 dbu contour doesn't encroach upon the new KMCQ 60 dbu, and the new KMCQ 54 dbu contour does not cross into the KMNT & KDUX 60 dbu. These are the rules for 1st adjacent stations. Actually, that's using the contour overlap method. In the commercial band, the FCC uses the Table of Allotments to determine spacing, but it's just the same.

Here's the Covington, WA. KMCQ service contour. Red is the 60 dbu, and blue is the 54 dbu. The transmit site is Radio Hill in Enumclaw. But we all know now that that was simply a ruse, or scheme, if you will. There won't be any build out in Enumclaw. It's Cougar Mountan they're after. All the assignor (First Broadcasting) has to do is file a minor change to Cougar, cover Covington with city-grade (70 dbu) service, file a contingent minor up at KAFE in Bellingham modifing to 104.1 Mhz, throw some bucks to SAGA, and change frequencies at the Forks, WA. class A FM. Voila! A new FM in a major market is born! And who would you guess owns the Forks, WA. FM? Why First Broadcasting! What a surprise! ;)

Just a correction. The 54 dbu is pink, not blue. The blue is the 40 dbu.

FM Steve is right on top of this thing again. Nicely put. My Hat's off to you!

Just one comment pertaining to your point about Cougar; that it's actually going to be EASIER for the "new" KMCQ to cover their new COL from Cougar as opposed to the current CP on file.

Cougar is higher and there's nothing between it and the City of Covington. A clean 70 DBU signal will no doubt blanket the COL, once (as you pointed out) the modified CP is granted and this is rubber-stamped yet again at the Commish in DC.

Gotta be nice to have the big bucks and just pay pave your way right through the R & R's and do whatever you want regardless of displacing smaller communites and providing good local service....

At least KMIH came away with something instead of being run over by these guys. Good for them!

Greetings from north of the border. Just want to mention that Industry Canada and the CRTC have been studying the possible use of 104.1 for the Vancouver area. I don't know what kind of implications (if any) this might have on KAFE's potential frequency switch.

As you probably know Vancouver now has 2 new FM stations operating adjacent to existing Bellingham area stations. CKYE-93.1 (Red FM) beside KISM-92.9 and CKAV-106.3 (Aboriginal Voices Radio) beside KWPZ-106.5. In this day and age of overcrowding on the FM band, they have to sandwich new stations in wherever they can I guess.

They have been doing that for awhile in LA ... amazing to sit in just the right spot and nudge the dial one position over --- another station. Next 1/billionth of a Mhz change and another station, etc. Granted those are sprayed in markets all over the Southland ... but it seems to have worked for years where they don't step on each other.

Perhaps some of this due to an assumption more people have digital tuners instead of knob/mechanical ones and it's easier to zone in on the staton you want than it used to be.

Here's a follow up to my earlier posting about 104.1 possibly being used in the Vancouver area. Today the CRTC released details about a new proposed CBC facility for Nanaimo, B.C. on 104.1 with 7,000 watts:
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Notices/2007/pb2007-31.htm#7
I would say Bellingham and Nanaimo are a little too close to each other to have stations broadcasting on 104.1 in both cities.

Any further word if KAFE is still planning to move to 104.1?

Can they worked out with Industry-Canada or CBC to move the allocation to 104.3 from 104.1 proposal so KAFE can easily move to 104.1?

By golly, E-dawg, you're thinking like an engineer! Yes, it appears as though the 104.1 app in Nanaimo could switch frequencies to 104.3. There is a station at Campbell River,BC on 104.5, so that would be a first-adjacency, but that facility is just 94 watts @ 112 HAAT. Looks like it might clear. Good job, E-dawg!

Wouldn't count on a lot of help from Industry Canada. They stonewalled Sandusy when Frazier Valley slapped a 92.5 signal on the air that blew the old KLSY out of Vancouver and Bellingham and even caused some grief in Everett.

Not to mention the new CBC Radio Two repeater in Chilliwack on 99.9 which signed on late last year resulting in KISW being a thing of the past up here.

I'm going to fire off an e-mail to the engineering department at CBC Vancouver tomorrow to find out if they are even aware that Saga plans to move KAFE to 104.1.
