104.7 in Anderson

Power Foundation which owns 103.1 WHQA in Anderson, along with 1280 WANS and 1020 WRIX, has placed a new FM translator on the air at 104.7 FM. The transmitter site is on top of a grain elevator on Whitehall Road near Pearman Dairy Road. They have a permit to move their 107.7 FM translator repeating WANS to the same site. According to the FCC application, 104.7 is to repeat WRIX.

Is it necessary to continue to clutter the dial with more needless translators? Although perhaps there will not be an interference issue in this area. But apparently something has changed regarding FCC regulations and translators, because all of a sudden in the past 4 or 5 years these translators and LPFMs have been emerging everywhere, and for the most part they are disrupting the distant signals of full power stations which used to come in clear. Very aggravating for many listeners, as the translator stations have weak signals and create mutual interference.

And 104.7 is already a problematic signal in parts of SC, as full power stations from Charlotte and Columbia mutually interfere along the I-77 corridor.

Clutter is exactly what much of this is. The amount of stuff on the FM band makes it almost impossible to listen to anything. Something like what Earth FM did with 95.9 makes sense to me, but I doubt these LPFMs and translators get much audience. Most come in so poorly they are of little useful purpose. Then again, this is one way to kill radio. "See, you could barely receive anything! Compressed MP3 streams sound soooo much better!" And many will nod in agreement.

I heard WANS the other night. They're calling it "God's Country". There was country music playing which wasn't as bad as what's on FM, but not as good as what I'd like.
