104.7 La GranD, Milwaukee's first-ever Spanish-language FM station

NextMedia is launching "104.7 La GranD," Milwaukee's first-ever Spanish-language FM station. WEXT-FM (104.7 The Wolf) will jettison its Country format on Friday (9-16) for Regional Mexican targeting 18-49 Hispanics. Programming for "La GranD" will be provided by Bustos Media Networks. Kira Lafond, VP/GM of seven of NextMedia's Illinois and Wisconsin outlets will oversee "La GranD."

"Our launch of 'La GranD' marks NextMedia's entry into the rapidly growing Spanish-language radio segment," said President/COO NextMedia Skip Weller. "We feel 'La GranD' will offer its listeners an authentic Mexican-themed radio format, while providing local businesses with a great opportunity to reach the growing Hispanic community in Milwaukee." According to the 2000 census, Hispanics make up about 12% of Milwaukee's total population.

Re: 104.7 Spanish-language

Good luck to all parties involved.

I remember in the mid 1970's when the AM of WRKR-FM in Racine had all Spanish programming.

Biggest concern was getting advertisers to pay their bills!

Also, with a Class A station, originally licensed to Sturtevant, it's not
really a 'real' Milwaukee station... call it a 'rim-shot' what it really is.

Any Class A that has to compete with a Big Band - Polka station on an
adjacent channel is not going to do a good job, except for the
southern part of the city.

Somehow, this is a station in search of an identity...
nothing more.

And where's the majority Hispanic population in the city?
