104.7 mid 80's upgrades

Back about 84 or so in the Pittsburgh's Heartbeat days they ran a teaser saying they would be off the air over the weekend and they would be coming back
with an improved signal (a louder stronger heartbeat as they put it). I do seem to remember there was some improvement with being able to get the signal on
a Walkman on a pat bus in the Southside. Does anybody know exactly what was done for that upgrade.

I think they moved the stick from New Kensington closer to the city, but maybe not exactly where they are now on the Northside. I don't know if there was an interim location, or the last improvements just came from changing the elevation of the antenna.

No they didn't move the stick in '84... what was done was a new transmitter was purchased and installed pumping out more TPO than previous... the station dropped telco lines in favor of STL... the newest Optimod (at the time) and I think some other audio processing equipment was purchased and installed... and a new and (at time time again) more state of the art antenna with fewer bays than previous (to make up for increased TPO) that I believe had beam tilt and null fill features which was tweaked by the riggers to point more toward downtown Pgh was installed. Although a change in antenna location was always discussed and promoted by On-Air/Engineering... it really never got beyond that... the word was "it couldn't be done" the "FCC would never go for it" "???
