104.7 the Hawk, Savannah's new home for Rock

Heard a spot saying that 92.3 will be the permanent home of Freedom.

And this is what we get...

http://www.thehawk1047.com/

In the last week or so, I noticed 104.7 really kicked up the processing from something that can be described as crap to a legitimate well-proccessed station. The station has also been easy to receive in downtown since then.

So, the alt. rock rumor/wish isn't dead yet, I suppose.

(P.S.: Why the hell is a picture of a rapper spinning records on a rock station's website? O_O )

I sincerely hope that this will be an alt-rock station. Goodness knows we don't need to hear Chevelle or Linkin Park seven thousand times a day, as Rock 106.1 loves to do. C'mon Tama...make this a really cool alt-rocker! I'll never change the dial! As of right now (1:25AM Friday morning), 104.7 is still simulcasting Freedom 92.3. Any thoughts, Radio-X, as to when the flip will occur?
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 04/14/06 05:26 AM.

If I were a betting man, I would say that by this time next week, 104.7 will have switched. I doubt it will be anytime before Monday, though.

Here's to hoping that Tama makes the station worth listening to. There is no reason why a Rock 106-1 or I-95 clone needs to be on the worse Savannah rimshot.

Anyway, I think an alternative to Rock 106-1 has been hoped for when 103.9 flipped to oldies, when 103.1 flipped to classic hits, and when 103.9 dumped oldies last year.

Anyway, back to overnight video editing marathons!

It's part of the syndicated website template they're using. If they're smart, they'll plug in their own graphics by the time the site goes live. :)

I'll be honest, I have a bad feeling this will be satellite-fed bullstank, just like everything else it appears they've been doing with their Savannah properties (Freedom and Smooth Jazz, anyone?). I would LOVE to have an awesome alt-rocker here, a la 96Wave in Charleston or even DC101 in Washington, but my hunch, going by the name alone, is that this will be a similar format to that of 96Rock in Atlanta - mostly classic-leaning. How I'd love to be proven wrong.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure what Tama is trying to accomplish with all of these changes. I'd have put the rocker on 100.1, which will actually cover Savannah and Hilton Head if/when the upgrade happens, and left Smooth Jazz and Freedom where they are already. Quite frankly, I think Freedom should be put out to pasture, unless they really want to capture a piece of that *enormous* share JackFM has...

And of course, if Tama half-asses the on-air product and doesn't bother getting their name out there, 104.7 The Hawk will be doomed from the start.

Yes, I have that hunch as well, though I think it's total nonsense to have a clone of two other full-market signals on a horrible rimshot. I'd bet a six pack of anybody's favorite poison if I'm wrong.

Perhaps the goal is to kill off Jack to keep Variety Hits to themselves?

Oh, you mean like all the previous formats on 104.7?

Anyway, we'll see soon. 104.7 went to dead air today for about 1/2 hour while 92.3 was doing "Freedom". I also have a feeling that one of the two other Tama properties will fail and perhaps rock will make it on there.

What does it matter?

You can't pick it up well in Savannah. So it won't have any effect on the big players 106.1 and 95.5.
______________

True, but...

When was the last time you saw 104.7 rated in a Savannah book?

The fact is, if they get even a consistant 0.4 share, the station is a success.

And the station will not hurt 106.1 or 95.5 unless it was on one of Tama's other stations.
