on-air promotions down here on the cape generally suck because the programmers in charge dont have relationships with record labels who can provide things like fly-aways, win it before you can buy its, signed product giveaways, etc. and that's because there's no programing committment to helping break current records. Programming teams down here just dont have that experience, or are not aware of how to go about developing such relationships.
PIXY does it to some degree, because they do play currents and have for quiet a few years, and they can usually tie in local businesses like limos and restaurants when they give away tix to a show in Boston. But how cool would it be for a station like the Rocket or Cool 102 to be playing current records by classic artists (ie a new Rush album or a new Cars record) in their rotations to help sell records to the millions of tourists who come down here during peak tourist times? there are newbury comics and FYE stores down here - you think the local reps in Boston wouldnt supply them with some sort of product or in-store giveaways or tie them into a regional promotions to reach this transient group and help increase the station's TSL?
we all know the business between labels and stations is about relationships, and unfortunately, Cape programmers just dont see that as an advantage to establish them, locally and nationally, to shine above their competetion. Again I understand, having programmed here, and Boston and NYC, that this is a small market with a very small Arbitron diary return twice a year, and that the rocket has no programming leadership to establish such relationships, but you get my point. there are programming opportunities down here that folks will not or have not taken advatange of, and that makes for pretty boring radio.
