104.9 FM Anchorage

...as of right now is airing a loop of Prince's 'Kiss' being interrupted with a record scratch and a voice saying 'Help me!'... I hope whatever the format is it's better than their ability to stunt...yikes.

Well with call letters of KMVV, its pretty obvious its going to be the "Movin" format, urban jammin oldies

Yeah - you're probably right. When I searched the FCC database yesterday I searched for 104.9 FM in Anchorage and found an application for an LPFM - didn't see KMVV as it's a Sterling station. You've got to wonder how that's going to work with K-Wave 104.9 in Soldotna.

On one hand - it'd be nice to have someone try something else than rock - much as I like the format - but Movin in this town? I just don't know about that...KFAT has been sliding for a while now and losing ground to the far less urban KGOT, which is consistent with the national trend, Rhythmic is stagnating and is starting to weaken in a lot of large markets, and Movin' hasn't made the splash anyone thought it would in ANY of the markets it's in. Granted they may not be focused square on FAT/GOT - but even if they wanted to skew older - what chance does a station that plays Beyonce and Nelly Furtado have against a KEAG/Magic? Maybe KMXS and KBBO should be more worried if this is the case. And then there's the other thing - where are you going to get your talent? I don't know what anyone else thinks, but that situation locally is about as sad as I can remember it ever being.

Does this town really need ANOTHER radio station? Just fractionalizing a small, stagnant audience even further. Look at the latest numbers, Morris and Clear dominate this town, while NNB and TATI split up the tiny remainder. You know those companies dominate in local billing. With radio, TV, newspaper, web, etc - how many ad dollars do these companies think there are??? My two cents - however wrong or right they may end up being!

...and we're off! The New Movin' 104.9 is on the air....at least KFAT's PD is a smart guy - I think he can fight this off pretty well, just have to wait and see....

They are Sterling in name only (just like KFAT, KBBO are Houston in name only). They are broadcasting from the KAFC/KATB stick up on upper Hilside and at 45KW, so they will reach Sterling, but Anchorage is the real target. Movin' in lower 48 markets has been so-so, I hope they fine tune it towards Anchorage, but this town does have a population suited for this format- 30plus avg age, 7% blk, 8% Hispanic, and it plays to white audiences too. It cant do worse than the overload of rock stations we have here.

Yeah I'm glad it didn't do something rock based. I did not know it was a TATI station until yesterday though, otherwise I would've never guessed rock as they own 94.7 KZND.

I'll give them credit for this - it's on a great signal, they spent the money for good imaging and so far it sounds like the Alan Burns consulted Movin' stations from Seattle/Portland/LA. Anchorage has a way of 'fine tuning' formats into the toilet, so I'm OK with them leaving this one alone for awhile.

AH, what do I really care - I'll forget about this station by next week and be back getting my Fagan/Colavecchio fix!

KWVV (K-Wave) doesnt use 104.9 in the Kenai/Soldotna area anymore. They use two translators 106.1 (205watts) from K-Beach Road forKenai & Soldotna, and 99.3 (140watts) from the state tower in Ridgeway for Kenai/Soldotna.. So there is no signal interference at 104.9 from KMVV (Sterling/Anchorage), which comes from the Anchorage Hillside.

Imaging? They don't even have a website with streaming or logo. What do you know about the imaging? Where is their website anyways? This is what sucks about new station flips these days. There is NO FRICKEN websites with logos on them! I'm a big collector of these things. I can't even get an aircheck cuz of no stream. KSYY in Denver still has NO updated website with stream and a handful of small market stations flipping to rock have no websites either! What good is radio if you can't even listen to it cuz ur out of the area and hate your local stations to death?

Well son - before you rise to your future posts as a Program Director and On-Air talent, you may want to brush up on your terminology - 'cuz' Imaging is the produced elements that go between the songs (i.e. '101 point 3 K-G-O-T, Alaska's #1 Hit Music Station'). If used properly 'imaging' is a powerful marketing tool for the station to brand itself in the listener's mind - creating an IMAGE of the station for the listener. Imaging has absolutely zero to do with the website or logos.

As far as the streaming situation goes, this is likely the last priority of Movin's right now. Just one week ago 104.9 FM Anchorage didn't exist, they're ironing out all of the quirks that go along with a new station, such as finding people to work there. A radio station's primary concern is the DMA it serves so they can sell advertising, not internet streaming. That sucks that you hate your local stations - even so you should intern at one of them so the next time you post here you have a remote semblance of a clue.

MOViN will do great in Anchorage.. it's a great format, it's a fun format...

The imaging on all the MOViN stations is real and fun -- I'm guessing they're using the same "brad" and "tasia" that the other markets are using?

Anchorage, it's time to FEEL GOOD! ;D

Yep, Brad has asked us to 'like, listen for an hour'. Sounds great, one of the strongest launches in this market's history...

That's so awesome! MOViN is awesome!

I agree with what you said there. I thought imaging was that, plus logo and website design as well. Even though it doesn't pay well, radio is what I want to do most in life as a career. I have only taken one broadcasting course because the school is over an hour away from me. Most of the stations are a aways away too unfort. What does DMA stand for?

It really stinks we don't have a format like Movin' here though and everyone is saying it's awesome yet we don't get the new formats like all the Jacks and stuff popping up in every market.

Where are you from icycool? Anchorage does have a lot of radio outlets for a city/metro it's size (359,000 as of 2006 stats Anchorage/Matsu), that is fortunate in itself.

I live in Waukesha, WI. This market is half the population of mine. akradio, you misunderstood greatly. I love listening to Alaska stations - there just isn't much discussion!

According to 2006 figures, Waukesha, WI has a population of 67, 814- this makes it about 300,000 people less than Metro Anchorage. Now, the greater Milwaukee area is vastly bigger than Anchorage, with more than 1,773,000 people. Greater Milwaukee has 33 stations, vs 33 for Anchorage-interesting. ;)

Anyone have thoughts on Movin'? Wolf's launch sure did eclipse this discussion, two new radio stations in less than a month - the spring book will be very interesting to see!

Strangely enough I like Movin', it's gets too dancy for me sometimes (I'm not their demo though), but I have heard some 90's tunes I haven't heard on the radio in a while - i.e. California Love, No Diggity, etc. My wife really dislikes Movin' though - she thinks it sounds like the Dance music channel at the Alaska club - :D

I think Movin' will do OK - they sound like they're paying attention to what their consultant is telling them and the signal is awesome.
