104.9 KJUN KKBY history

Hey Guys:

I wanted to make sure I have this correct:

104.9 KJUN started in 1995 as country. Did it simulcast 1450 or have seperate programming?

7-5-96 104.9 was KKBY Classic country as Y-104.9.

Question I have: was KKBY at anytime Urban/AC before it went to "the funky monkey" in 1999?

Thanks
T.J.

Yes, T.J.

Do you hold a library card? There are tons of articles available for free online about this format change. I think Bill Virgin (Verrr-gu-in) even wrote up some stuff in the Post Intelligencer, whose archives are available online free.

OKAY... anyways....

KJUN was "The Cowboy".  I remember hearing Ichabod Cain on there for a bit, while he went from 94.1, to 106.1, to 104.9, and eventaully back to 94.1...  I think it was a hybrid current country/classic country formatted station, but playing more current hits than KGY was.

It became KKBY, but shortly after the call letter change to match it's station name, it became a short-lived rhythmitic oldies station... "Y-104.9".  Playing urban/disco from the 70s & 80s similar to what 95.7 was playing when it was "The Beat".

Now of course, it's now "The Funky Monkey", playing alternative music...

Thank you guys for your answers.

swhyde1980: Would you happen to know did 104.9 simucast it's programming with 1450?

SeattleObserver: I do have a library card. I am there a lot. I also live in Florida. I also looked up what you said and found 3 articles about KKBY going from Urban to Funky Monkey. Nothing about them going from country to urban. Thank you for that.

I do know that 1450 KJUN was also called the cowboy as well. Didn't 1450 run the "COUNTRY GOLD NETWORK"?

When they turned on the FM, They were still the Country Gold Network. 1450, 1330, 1280, 1230 and 1540 were all simulcasting the same content. They broke apart during stop sets as each station had different ads sold. I used to tromp around up there in Fife during that period of time. It was really exciting that they were able to get an FM. I recall that they hosted their website through The News Tribune's web services at the time and it looked it. They were surprised at how bad some of their carts and production sounded when they went FM!

They used to joke that they were FM'n it. Say it out loud a couple times to get it.
