104.9 KVL new imaging & playlist

Just noticed yesterday that Loud Media has made some tweaks to the 90s/2000’s Throwbacks format on 104.9 KVL. They’ve added St John for the station imaging (he’s a longtime San Francisco dj & voiceover guy. He previously did the imaging for Loud’s Jump 97.1 here in Knox. as well as the old Wild 98.7 back in the early 2000s).
Also, the playlist has been tweaked & now sounds much better & focused. The rock & alternative tracks are gone & they’re now focusing on just rhythmic hip hop & pop from the 90s/2000s. And the selection of rhythmic tracks seem a lot more focused with way less odd stiffs then what they were playing previously. It basically sounds like Jump with added rhythmic pop mixed in with the hip hop throwbacks. It sounds much better & the imaging is way more upbeat & fun now & fits the station much better.
The 104.9 signal is still the biggest liability, but if people do find it, I think it could take some listeners from Star, B, & Hot. I’m glad they seem to be sticking with the format for now & got the playlist & imaging in much better shape. I think both KVL & Atomic sound really good now. I know all of Loud’s stations are limited by their signals, but they’re honestly my favorite station group in the market.

(Oh, also noticed that Loud has went all Xmas on Fun 105.9 now too. They’re still using the Fun name though, so I expect they’ll probably return to classic hits after the holidays)

Interesting change. Looking back at the playlist changes over the week, it just seems like they took out all the non-rhythmic songs. It does look a little better now, but still seems all over the place. I wish they sounded like the more focused approach that iHeart uses for their throwback stations. As it is, I don’t think I’ll be listening much to 104.9. Of course that signal makes it challenging anyway.

Since you mentioned Atomic 106, I keep going back and forth with them. I listened today and it sounded pretty good. They do have a good variety. So I’ll continue to tune in occasionally.

I definitely like the new imaging & sweepers better. Musically, besides the rock tracks being removed, it seems to my ears to be a bit more “hit” focused now. Some of the lesser known hip hop stuff seems to have been replaced with more pop rhythmic hits (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kesha, etc. I also heard several rhythmic dance tracks n from the 90s too that I hadn’t noticed before). I think it’s certainly more cohesive now though than before. As far as 90s/2k stations, the one I had listened to most was Cumulus’s now defunct Hot 93.3 in Dallas. And KVL kinda reminds me of the way they sounded.

I was able to spend some time sampling 104.9 KVL today. You’re right, it does sound much better than it used to. I recognized all the songs within a two hour time frame. Some I liked, many I didn’t. But they flowed well within the format.

Also during this time I sampled Fun 105.9’s Christmas format. It’s way too heavy on country music. Loud Media seems to do this every year with wherever they decide to put the Christmas music. They need to cut back to maybe one country song per hour.
