104.9 THE GUMP

Day 5. WACV transmitter is on the air, but limping along. Just ordered a new 10kw. The translator is operating under an STA and is totally legal in status while pending it's renewal. Don't be surprised to see the Gump on a Prattville and Wetumpka translator also as well as an upgraded downtown tower site. All plans for the immediate future. The quick response speaks toward an unmet demand. The problem with the Oldies format wasnlack of advertiser support. The Gump is actually generating call-INS from advertisers. This is cool....oh, and btw,, The Gump will never beat the Fox in ratings - nor is it designed to. It doesn't have to to be successful.

What you really need is a translator for the Troy area. Seems to me a recipe for immense paydirt.

It's what I've been saying for years...Modern Rock in smaller markets is a niche that needs filling. There are apparently more 18-34's listening to the radio than we thought. (and CHR isn't their format of choice)

Hey Dothan Radio,

I am one of the converted now...and this is on a translator. Fortunately, this demo thinks nothing about streaming and alternate platforms. We'll have our iPhone app up next week. Hopefully the new android platform will support flash And the webstream players will run without an app.

So here's a question for all of you to weigh in on: Are we broadcasters hastening our own demise by NOT programming to 18-34?

Not much radio is actually what I call programming anymore. It a PC with a bunch of song's some HD drive picked out by a burned out has been 1,000 miles away. Radio is a homogenized pile of crap that barely different from one market to the next. You used to turn on a top 40 station in Louisianna and here Stevie B, TKA, and Johnny O because that was popular with people in that region blended with all the usual top 40 songs. In other markets there were other things very unique about them in the same way. Now you just buy a HD preloaded with the music that plays in every other market and play it in yours and expect people to tune in and love it. I hope the people who are still able to make a difference realize they are to blame. My mp3's can only entertain me to a certain level. They wont talk to me directly, make me laugh, or teach me anything new.

I am glad to see someone trying to do something creative in Radio. I wish you guys good luck down there.
I'd love to see what Nirvana sounds like on AM. I know the intent is actually for people to hear it on the translator but I'd still love to hear it.

Not in 18-34 demo anymore, but in neighboring 35-44 ..

I am a schoolteacher and have discovered in recent years that the best way to reach the young people of today is via their digital devices -- whether that's an iPhone, a Droid, laptop, Facebook, MySpace, whatever. I used to send notes home; now we contact parents (most of whom grew up in the internet era) via email and texts.

It is my hope that there will never come a day when the non-disc jockey radio station is the dominant format. The need for a warm body and human voice will always be there. A hyperdrive wild character would be incongruous on a station like the Gump, but would almost be a necessity on a top 40 station like Y102. Still, I hope there will always be a place for good music and good personalities who know how to treat their local audience with respect while having a good time.

Just the ramblings of an ex-radio head, now teacher and grocery clerk.

Nice move! Dothan needs one of these. For some reason "The Dot" just doesn't have as nice a ring to it :-(
"The Gump", great branding!

Good luck with THE GUMP. This is exciting, and from this rock fan .. I'm glad someone finally did this. Enjoying the webstream here in Tallassee.

Other than the dearly departed Alice 96.1, the last time Montgomery signed on a rock station was 95.1 The Fox in the summer of 1989. Prior to that time, there had been a rock station on AM 950 called "95 Rock" that had a loyal following. I know the young rock fans of today who have been craving a station like this will enjoy THE GUMP - a uniquely named station for a unique place to live and work.

Congratulations.

You forgot about LIVE 101.9. It was new rock/alternative from 1993(?) to early 1996(?). They flipped it to Cat Country 102 and then back to Y102.

Just curious, the FCC Database shows 104.9 translator in Montgomery, Al as being cancelled. It shows DW285AJ Licensed to Katherine Timmerman Hagler. Did this license get re-instated, if so by whom?

The translator is still owned by the Haglers. It is operating under an STA while some paperwork issues are resolved pertaining to a previous renewal if the license. The Gump project (as was Oldies) is a joint project between the Haglers and Bluewater Broadcasting and is being programmer by Bluewater. The translator is being used under the new AM on FM
Fill-in rules. It is rebroadcasting Bluewaters WACV which is also operating under an STA due to a lightning strike. Hope this clears things up

I don't think LIVE 101.9 was around that long. Maybe 1995-96. Larry Stevens and crew left Y102 around 1993 or 1994 for Mix 103. It was probably a year or two later before the active rock attempt happened, if memory serves me correctly. But then they did the Cat Country thing, which lasted for a few years.

A robotic voice said, "T-minus ... and counting" while the voice told broken-down Henny Youngman style jokes and one-liners.
