104.9 The Horn Will be No More

Craig Way is now on 1300thezone...........What a circular business.

I wrote this comment on the RadioInsight FB post announcing this news...

"I wonder if they will flip the 103.1 translator back to a simulcast of The Zone for the third time. Seems appropriate. AM in Austin is dreadful. And the current 80s format doesn’t seem to be moving the needle much."

KVET-FM is the Official FM Home of the longhorns, I don't think they will be blowing up 103.1 just yet.

According to the Learfield press release from last month, 1300 is actually the "flagship", with football and men's basketball simulcasting on 98.1 (and I wonder if that is all men's basketball games or just select, I'm kind of skeptical they are going to dump the country music to carry UT vs Incarnate Word, but maybe they will).

Obviously doesn't include Craig's new show, baseball, or anything else. 1,000 watts at night in a very directional pattern way up on 1300 on the band isn't going to get the job done, but maybe they are going to try to get everyone streaming it all anyway.

Yep, 1300 is Flagship, KVET-FM is the FM Home.

"iHeartMedia’s KVET-AM 1300 The Zone will become the flagship station, with Longhorns football and men’s basketball programming simulcast on KVET-FM 98.1"

KTXX HD-1 is probably the worse sounding HD channel I have heard. The HD-4 station sounds better then them.

Second, the days of 1260/101.9 are probably numbered. Seems like they will finish their Texas Rangers obligation and probably fill the rest of the lineup with a network... be it Fox Sports Radio or CBS or SportsMap. Seems unlikely it can survive for long as a stand alone facility covering so little of the market.
This. The Rangers aren’t a big draw in spite of their season. Ironically Bally Sports demise leaves the team without a TV outlet as well possibly beginning next season.

Baseball, in general, isn't a ratings draw for radio. It might do well in a few markets, like St. Louis where the Cardinals practically run the city, but you won't find too many places that turn to radio to get baseball.

Specifically for the Texas Rangers in the Austin market, I totally agree. But overall I'm not so sure about that. There are more than a few markets that see a nice initial bump from the start of baseball season and down the stretch if the local team is in the race... Saint Louis is a prime example, but so is Detroit, Boston, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, etc.

I would say local baseball on local radio is a bigger pull than basketball/hockey/soccer etc in most places and probably even outperforms football in some places.
