104.9 The new Edge

allright, so it's been a while now...In the very crowded Rock market that Albany is. How do you guys feel that the New Edge has done? A report card if you will...Is this station for real? does it have what it takes...Jox, Music, production, promotions...Thoughts??
 
Who knows if it's "for real"...what does that MEAN in radio, anyway? They could change formats tomorrow, anyone can. Radio has gotten so "good" in this market, I find myself listening less and less. There isn't a single station that I think "I wonder what those guys are gonna do next?". There is not a soul working in this market with the balls to shake things up.
Report Card?
Jox?...sorry, I can't name a single one.
Music? Not any great shakes. A PYX clone. You know, safe choices, overplayed stuff, no surprises. What-to-listen-to-when-PYX-is-in-stopset. That may be their GOAL.
Production? Haven't heard much station imaging lately. And certainly nothing memorable.
Promotions? They have promotions? Sorry, I can't think of any.
It's all so very ho-hum. SSDD

I've said it before, I will say it again...the real "innovator" in this market will take one of their signals Spanish/Latino. But of course that will mean someone knowing how to speak Spanish to make sure the jox don't "risk the license".

Innovative for who? By more-or-less writing off 90+% of the potential listeners in the area by microserving a small sector of the population would not be innovative by any stretch. It would be nothing short of a huge financial risk for the station that attmepts it, unless it could get by strictly on agency sales. And again, it would do nothing to serve everybody else who doesn't know how to speak Spanish (the vast majority of upstaters). A bi-lingual, multi-genre music station where *everybody* could at least understand something from it, that might be innovative.
 
Wow, I thought this was a grading post for The Edge.
BTW Orator, If your gunna post about the edge, at least have some info about the station before you judge eh??
I got it, how about a spanish language dance station hosted by bushy moustached jocks who like to scream AYE CARUMBA!! on every break.
 
I understand your point. Bi lingual is a great idea.
The Latino population in the Albany Metro has grown quite a bit in just the last few years.

If a station is currently pulling 12+ numbers like .4-.9...what in God's name do they have to lose? It's a better experiment than some programming rehash. At least it would generate some interest, which we sorely lack.
I'm sure there are studies underway as to the feasibility of Latino in this market. We shall see.

On another note, since my post, I had to look at The "New Edge" website. I was partially wrong. I recognize some of the jocks. Isn't "Don Chopps" doing double-duty as Rob Dyer -in the SAME daypart up in Glens Falls?
ABC is so CHEAP! Playlist is as "edgy" as the old edge. 103.1 does a much better job.
The correct current PYX clone is the "old edge", now Q103...and for some reason, I like them better than PYX and I have been a PYX fan since the 80's!

My confusion -and no doubt others'-just goes to show how undifferentiated the rock stations are in people's minds.

It's obvious that I don't listen for great lengths of time anymore. I flip through the dial, and put in a cd. I am easily bored. I wonder if others in the 25-54 demo feel the same way?

The real questions is, what are programmers gonna do about THAT?

"104.9-The Scavenger" is more like it. WZMR started off a few years ago with the former WXLE's AAA/Modern AC format.
After that it was WHRL's discarded Smooth Jazz format. Originally, they were hoping to get the
WHRL call letters to go with it. They were a repeater for a Glens Falls Country station for a year
or so, too. Now...its WQBK's discarded Active Rock format, and discarded name...That said.....
I think that the station sounds very good these days. They probably have the best chance for
success, than any previous format that has been done on 104.9. The new Edge is somewhat
different, from the old one. The previous Edge was pretty much driven by the Howard Stern
show. This station is much more driven by the music. The music on the new Edge, is also very
similar to the old Edge. In any case, the trends for the new Edge have been looking pretty good.
In the last trend, they were nearly tied with WQBK, and were ahead of WEQX, and way ahead
of the Bone. Considering too, that they don't have the greatest signal, I would say that they
are definitely doing pretty well. My guess is that they will be one of the local rock war survivors.
 
104.9 was created to entice regent to buy the station. When Regent flipped them the bird with the 105 deal

what else could they do but try and make it work. It's only a matter of time before it falls on it's face. I

addmitt its off to an ok start but take a good look at the competition. How long do you think it will last with

all those Galaxy rejects anyway? Come on and get a real job already!

The Edge is already at a 2 share and shows NO sign of stopping. Did I mention they only have one signal and it's kinda weak too??

FACT:
The Bone has suffered a complete failure since the departure of said rejects.
Look it up.

ok ok ok. Don't get those silky little things in a bunch. I said... i addmitt that they came out of the gate swinging. WOW!!! A 2 share...That's something to be excited about! Or is it? I'm not sure why you are attacking The Bone. A station with a half share as you put it... is barley a station to get as worked up as you are. If you knew anything you would know that The JR show only pulled ratings on time in it's long stay at Galaxy. One lucky month out of 48. Great job guys! The Bone never pulled ratings. It was a failure from the beginning. I guess what i'm trying to say is that The Capital Region rejected The Bone. With that said i'm hoping that you get it now. A line up like what The Bone LAUNCHED with is far from a line up to brag about. Good luck 104.9! Here's to a 2.1!

Like I said before, I'll say it again for the people that are challenged in understanding things...I post on here from radio peeps who tell me info. PLAIN AND SIMPLE..I don't come on here wasting my time with peeps who are negative.

I can't really argue with anything that you stated...yet somehow the Bone manages to remain in business...Go figure....
 
gettin closer to that 2.1, the edge looks like it contiues to grow...
