South Jersey 104.9 WRDR

Does anyone know what happened to 104.9 WRDR? I was visiting friends and family in southern NJ not too long ago and was quite surprised to hear when I tuned in music that is popular among young adults and teenagers these days (instead of hearing the likes of Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, and other artists known during the Big Band Era). I used to live in the Atlantic City area until I retired to Florida about 25 years ago and was a big listener to WRDR.

In '97, Rodio sold WRDR to New Jersey Broadcasting, who flipped WRDR to an early-1970s music mix that sounded like WIP in the '70s. In '99, the station was sold again and became WEMG-FM with a Spanish Tropical format from Mega Broadcasting. The station was simulcast with 1310 AM in Camden, and both stations adopted the "Mega 104.9" branding. After another sale in 2003, this time to Nassau Broadcasting, the station began simulcasting the company's "97.5 PST" (CHR WPST Trenton), before airing country music for much of the summer. Nassau then flipped 104.9 FM to smooth jazz as WOJZ in late August. After another sale to Millennium in 2004, the current Hot A/C format "SoJo" was launched. In 2011, WSJO, along with the rest of the Millennium-Atlantic City cluster, was sold to Townsquare Media, the current owner.

In short, a ton happened.

After the station was sold to the same company that owns NJ 101.5, it began operating at WKXW's studios in Ewing. The current owner is Townsquare. Wikipedia has more about the changes on WSJO 104.9.

I haven't been to NJ in so long (probably a good 20 years or so)...hardly recognize Atlantic City anymore. It's real sad that WRDR went by the wayside. Couldn't even find any radio stations in the area that had a format similar to WRDR. In my humble opinion, it's all crap out there. That's why I listen to Sirius.

Even WJZ 640 outlasted WRDR playing big bands and standards in South Jersey. The former lasted until ‘99 while the latter ditched that format in ‘97 as was previously mentioned.
